As a Christian, I can appreciate the apology you are offering. I would like to add however, that among Christians, there are varying practices and degrees of beliefs. Many Christians DO believe in the burning hell and many do not. The semantics of what is and is not should not be the primary focus of Christians when telling others about Christ. The focus should be on having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. All other things take a back seat. If one has a good relationship with Christ, then the things that are important will be worked out, regardless of how one practices their beliefs.
If anything needs to be apologized for with regard to apologizing to Atheists, as a Christian, I believe that rather than apologizing for our varying interpretations of Scripture, we ought to apologize for those who claim to be Christians but are hateful, judgmental or unkind in how we word our questions or answers. How we treat others is a reflection of how we will be perceived by others, Atheists included. When we are unkind toward others, we lose the chance to point the way to Christ because we have closed off positive communication and have destroyed our own credibility as Christians. I agree with the premise of your question, but I think the apology needs to be for the way many Christians turn others away from God by being hateful or mean in how they word things. That's just my perspective. Your question was a good one though.

Well then, as a christian, you probably also know that Jesus Christ, who spoke about the reality of hell, didn't follow the teaching of Babylonia. People get turned off to God because it's in our unrepented sinful nature to do so. Jesus said that many people would be turned off to God.
The only reason why Christians try to "force their beliefs" (as some have called it) down other's throats is because they don't want to see them go to hell. It's a by-product of the love that Christ put into us. (Here's were I'll get the negative votes:) But if a person wants to go to hell then by golly let them. It's their choice.

As a Christian (atleast I think I can safely call myself that) I have found that there are quite a few places online that INTELLIGENTLY debate hell both ways (quite a rare occurance in these days :)
Here is one: (I found like 2 or 3 others, but I forget the links)
http://foolmoon.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/103251/site_id/1#import
PS.. Pretty sure the link should work
Edit Another Note: It is just my opinion (I don't mean to offend anyone), but I think the MAIN reason people (that believe a higher authority exists) get turned away from Christianity is the picture of a vengeful god who will burn you ETERNALLY if you don't follow everything 100% perfectly.
Humans aren't perfect.

I'm a Christian as well and explain the false burning hell to me, i'm curious. Ok, so you think burning in Hell is a load of crap? Are you certain you're a Christian? Burning in hell has been mentioned countless times in the Bible, how can you reject that fact and apologize for something what we believe in?

You are a nice person. Don't listen to the meanies who have responded to your olive branch. I am a pagan Witch, and I just hope I live to see the day when a Christian comes on here and apologizes for saying there are no such thing as Witches or saying that it doesn't matter what a Witch actually does, if yo even simply call yourself the word Witch, you are evil.
I'm not holding my breath, but who knows? Anyhow, seeing the problems with Christianity can't hurt!

You think we disbelieve in god because we fear hell? Sorry to burst your bubble, but I disbelieve in god because I can see no proof he exists. I also see religion as a way to keep people in line who need to be kept there. I have no problem being ethical and I follow the ten commandments without having to believe some invisible person said to.

Don't apologize for the things you never did, because it's hollow. The important thing is to live you life according to you own beliefs and not try to force them on others. If more people would be like you we could have avoided a lot of things.

I am not holy than thou, but I am wondering what kind of Christian are you? Heaven and Hell are the summation of the bible; no one is forced to go to either.
I think the atheist has more faith than you.
Forget the atheist, you need to apologize to a Christian for impersonating one. It is persons like you who we see is wishy washy. I have far more respect for someone who is actually living or practicing what he preaches.

I don't mind it too much, but that sort of helps I suppose. You guys are just trying to do what you think is right, and I can't fault you for that. However, I really appreciate this apology.
