Years ago my therapist told me that if I lost the weight....I would lose half of the depression. Never forgot those words. You would think that would be enough to motivate me. Instead I stay depressed and overweight. What is it going to take for me to make a change? Thanks for your input.

Hi there... I really relate to your post.

What a powerful statement. So many interpretations.. less weight could improve your self-esteem. Less weight could also lead to decreased dosage for anti-depressant medication. Less weight could also bring the chemical reactions in your body closer to "normal" levels.

You already know that the only possible motivation comes from within. You have the power to make healthy choices. I have just started a similar journey towards health. I choose to smile more, move more and eat well. I think you are a brave person just to post here and ask for help. Take a few baby steps towards health, expect to slip the odd time and find friends to laugh and share with. You are already on the path...

Its not about losing pounds off a scale, its about motivating yourself and looking in the mirror and feeling great! I think that loosing some weight will make you feel more confident and you will soon become a happier person, weight triggers so many emotions so it could be the heart of your depression! i say give it a try.. even if its just a walk every day, and healthy snacks!

Just think of how much better your quality of life is gona be if you lose at least a little weight - you will be more fit, more active, will be able to run for a long time, fit in better looking clothes etc.
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
go to shape.com community - there are forums for diet, working out, support, recipes etc. - it will help you to lose weight healthy way
