Yep. You basically get treated like crap by everyone higher ranking than you. It's what makes new Army recruits wish they'd joined the USAF instead.

It's called training... not education...
The purpose of boot camp is to make you stop thinking like an individual and start acting like a member of the team. To that end they dress you all the same. They cut your hair all the same. You make your bunks the same. You eat the same food. You march together. You do PT together.
You are trained how to respond to certain circumstances. And you do it over and over again.
When you go into combat, your life may depend on your buddy's training. You will find that when something happens, the training will kick in and probably save your life.
Nothing is personal If you get some DI screaming in your face one day, he'll probably be in somebody else's face the next. If you're kind of a klutz, or a slow learner, you will likely get yelled at a lot. But again, it's not personal. That DI... and all of them... want to turn out soldiers who can depend upon each other in crisis situations. If they can't count on each other... people die.
There is a little education. You will learn the rules and regulations you need to know to function as a soldier. There are reasons for that too. First, obviously it'll help you function as a soldier. But it also teaches you discipline and attention to detail.
You will probably think basic is the worst time of your life. It may seem that way at the time... but believe me, it isn't.

yelling is a technique used to teach primarily the new recruits in Basic training. because majority of the recruits are teens, yelling at them is a way to grab their attention as well as maintain their attention throughtout the block of instructions. But that was back in the day. In todays Army yelling at soldiers in Basic training is no longer allowed, especially the use of profanity..But once out of Basic and at a regular duty station. It depends on the personality of your leader or whoevers teaching. But most leaders(good leaders) know that yelling doesnt do anybody good. unless your just really ate up..

There are two ways to learn in the army: Repetition and shock.
It works well, but lately they have been getting more "pussified new army", and that is a bad thing, if you ask me.
My first team chief made my life a living hell for the 1st month, he also made me a much better soldier and because of him I got my E5 in 3 years. He was also the best NCO I ever had.

They teach you to work together as a team. The "yelling" in basic training is designed to break down individualistic ideas. Once the soldier is "broke" of the "me" attitude, they are ready to learn how to operate as a team. The "yelling" is actually meant to create unity...everyone thinks they made a mistake and find solace and a common bond with each other. "United WE stand...Divided WE fall"

Any yelling is done during Boot Camp. And the teaching works when people learn (by yelling at them) to shut up. You'd be surprised how much and how fast you can learn when you are listening. Only after that, you get yelled at if you really, really screw up.

They yell at you during basic training to shock you out of the (civilian) habit of having everything explained to you and to get you into the habit of following orders quickly and efficiently the first time.
During times of emergency ie. fires, attacks, etc. there's no TIME to explain what to do and why you need to do it. Everyone would end up dead. The men (and women) you serve with must enter extreme situations with confidence, knowing that everyone will perform, as trained, when required.

They break you down at boot camp and build you up along the way. They want you to be "Army" strong and that requires you to do everything they say without question so when you are in a war you will do exactly what they tell you to do without question.
They only yell at you when you mess up - Don't. I'd be scared, too. Thanks for your service, though : )

It is not always yelling, most things are taught through repetition. If you do something enough times, you learn how to do it correctly every time. Sometimes called muscle memory.

YES. They believe (apparently rightly) that they need to tear these people down to bare dirt to have the discipline and obedience they must have. That's why you can't have items from home and why you get your hair shaved off. DROP DOWN AND GIVE ME FIFTY YOU DIRT BAG.
My brother had to sleep with his rifle for about 2 weeks when he was in Marine Corp boot camp.
