Depends on what state. In my state, their goal is to get you in shape, but you do have to pass a physical before going in.

The expectations of a cadet are pretty major. You need to be able to run a 12 minute mile. You need to be able to carry a dummy that weighs over 200lbs(not entirely sure of exactly weight). I suppose you don't need to be in great shape but it will make the academy experience much easier. Being a police officer is a very physically demanding job. If you have any idea that you are thinking of testing out or joining an academy on your own, you really should start training now. Start running, start building up mass, and endurance.

No agency I know of will send you through until you pass a physical exercise set-up of some sort. Usually a timed run, push ups, set ups, wall climb, etc. They're not that tough.
Many colleges offer part time academies to get your POST accreditation. They have physical fitness during the academy, but there is no minimum requirement to pass to enter.

In California...
All agencies have a minimum physical fitness test as part of their testing program. If you pass that, you're good. However, the better shape you're in will mean you'll be doing better once you start the academy. They have a good variety of PT - cardiovascular workout, weights, etc...
If you go in as an unaffiliated student, make sure that you can at least pass one of the agency's minimum requirements. that'll help in the long run. Don't go in as a couch potato and expect them to make you into something you aren't...

Any agency you apply for will have PT requirements readily available for those interested. Every academy and agency has slightly different standards. What you don't want to be is a big slob who can't do the job. I've seen guys who let uspects get away in foot pursuits because they couldn't even run fast and long enough to keep the guy in sight. I can't imagine livng with that. PT standards for most LE academies aren't that tough, it's not the special forces after all.

Yes you do. Not only does the agency that hires you have a physical fitness standard, but you'll need to be in shape to succeed in the academy. The academy will expect you to have the ability to run several miles, do dozens of pushups, situps, pullups, and everything else. Plus, being in shape will make PT one less thing for you to worry about, and it is a proven fact that being in shape helps you concentrate and focus better. If you're out of shape, you'll be hurting during PT, running the risk of being dropped out because of PT failure or injury, or failing academically because you just can't focus on the studies. In short, get in shape before you go. You'll thank yourself when you're getting that badge pinned on your chest.

The Fleet managers over the years have long gone with the Crown Vic's for assorted motives. Rear wheel force, better trunk area, better transport cage area, greater suited dependability. The Vic has been the marked motor vehicle of selection for some years.
