The standard age is 5, but more and more these days, parents are making these decisions based upon whether they think their children are really ready for it. My older nephew was 6, because my sister felt that he was a little uncoordinated, and she was afraid that as a boy, he would be at a disadvantage if he were too bad at sports. He is now in middle school and doing very well, but he will be 19 when he graduates from high school. His younger brother is starting school this year at 5, and because he had a big brother in school, he is more ready for it and very excited to start. I was four, and just fine.

I just read that your son is two. No school would possibly take him in kindergarten that young, but maybe what you mean isn't kindergarten (which is a one-year program prior to first grade), but what we would call preschool, or day care? I know that the term is used that way in Europe. In that case, it depends upon how comfortable your child is with being away from you. Two seems a little early; three or four would probably be more common.

I would say the best time to send a child to school is
A. Whenever you have enough pressure to feel that he "should" be in school.
B. Whenever you feel you can't handle having your child in the house any longer.
C. Whenever you feel he is old enough to be able to maturely handle the peer pressure, fighting, name calling, swearing, and other things that go on in the normal preschools.
D. College (oops, that is when I am sending my children to public school).

I just can't see the benefits of public school, no matter how hard I try. Less of an education scattered among more students, more peer pressure and students who will teach children things parents don't want them to be taught, 30% of high school graduates in this country can't read on a second grade level?

I'm sorry to those out there who love public school or even private school, but I still think a mature, loving, responsible parent will always make a better teacher than one with 30 kids that aren't her own with 30 different types and levels of learning jammed into one classroom for hours at a time, no matter how kind their heart is.

kindergarten is usually based on when the kid turns 5 most schools and districts have a cut off date.

preschool is another matter there was a home study program for 3 yr olds and then the next yr the preschool.
my younger son is an oct baby he had to start at 4 yrs old my older is a dec baby he had to wait till 5 yrs old however we had my younger son stay an additional yr in kindergarten
its also if the kid is ready for it.

Trust me, wait til he's 4, my mom put me in when I was 3. I then proceeded to throw legos at the other children and bite my teacher's rear-end. She had a BIG JUICY ONE , so I just went at it. That a boy!! Seriously, wait til he's 4.
