decent neighborhood. (and im from pasadena, in LA, CA mind you) i do have a company car so parking would have to be convenient, and mostly safe. or does everywhere in new york smell and have a good percentage of getting robbed? please help with some insight fellow New Yorkers..!

If your going to be a driver, i would suggest looking for a place farther away from the city in Brooklyn, more towards the Nassau county border. Its cheaper, parking wont be an issue as much and it will be more like what your used to in California (if such a correlation can be made)
You need to understand New York and Cali are two very different entitities. You will have to reinvent yourself in many ways to make it here.
No, you wont get robbed or mugged. That is, as long as you remain savy and always aware of your surroundings. Crime will happen anywhere here, just protect yourself and do as teh Romans do.
Why do you think New York smells? maybe you forgot to put your deodorant on this morning? No, NYC doesnt all smell, just that in the summer time it can get a bit funky in some areas.
Check out Bayside, Ozone Park,Rockaways in Brooklyn. They are farther out, but will most likely be cheap and have parking. The closer you get to Manhattan, the tighter it gets and you will have to lose your car in favor of mass transit like the majority of us.

Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn. Either Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, or a little more west in Bensonhurst.
