I applied for a frontier airlines mastercard today, and I got declined for not having adequate income I think, but that doesn't make sense considering I selected "student" under occupation. Is there anyone who is a student and was able to get a credit card with little or no income? Thanks.

Even though "student" was an option on your credit card application, you probably weren't applying for a "student credit card". There are actually credit cards designed specifically for college students with little or no income. You can find a complete list here:

Although these offers tend to have slightly higher interest rates than 'standard' credit cards, they're a great way to build and improve your credit score over time. Eventually, with regular on-time payments-- you'll be able to qualify for other offers. But for now, these are your options...

Hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!

Yes, yes and yes there are more than enough credit card companies willing to give students credit cards. They make a lot of money from students. Since students don't have existing credit, the interest rates are a lot higher. Do a simple search for student credit cards. Once you find the company call them and ask them what are the requirements. Do this before you actually apply.

Also check your credit and view your fico score. This will allow you to know exactly where you are.

Not all possible and available college student credit cards are right for everyone. You should avoid one that charges an excessively high interest rate, unless you know for a fact that you will be paying it off in full at the end of the month. Keep in mind that the credit card issuers are taking a bit of a chance on you, since you probably have little or no credit history established, and therefore the interest rate on virtually ANY credit card you are approved for is going to be higher than "usual", where "usual" would be the rate that perhaps your parents would get approved for, since they already have a credit history established.

Most college students today need a car, and many of them make the mistake of tying up all of their credit cards in paying for a car. This is probably the worst possible option for buying a car, since the interest rates will be astronomical that way. It would be much better to get a separate car loan and keep your credit cards free up for things you really need. You can get more information about getting a superb deal on a car loan, where many of these loans would be tailored for college students, at Car Loan Resources.

You need to be honest with yourself – are you and can you be financially responsible with this college student credit card and you are the only one that can answer that. If you are not sure, then perhaps a secured card would be the best place to start. This is where you make a deposit with the card issuer, say a bank or credit union, and then your credit limit is the amount of your deposit. This is actually a great place to start and to learn fiscal responsibility and to get used to getting into the religious habit of paying your credit card bill on time every month, and to understand how the interest can add up, and unfortunately, how late fees can also add up. Yes, but you need to apply for cards that are specifically for college students.

To see a list of college student cards (that pay you rewards for using them) and calculate which will pay you the most for your normal spending, you can check out this reward calculator:

By the way, that Citi mtvU student card is awesome (for the 5% at restaurants, movie theaters, etc.); I wish I could get it.
