My boyfriend has a 1990 Mazda Miata with over 200,000 miles on it and the transmission locked up on him today while driving on the interstate. I told him I think he should try to sell it for parts but he's thinking of getting a new transmission for it. I don't think it'd be worth it considering he only payed $1000 for it.
What do you guys think?

That thing is pretty much on it's last legs. It's not worth throwing any more money at it. Sell it for parts.

Hi there! If you really want to keep it you have tgo pay the price for keeping it in running condition. Yes you might have to pay more for it. 200,000 miles is already a cars end-of-life. This is when mechanical parts fails. There is such a thing as strength of materials and the previous owner already used up it's lifespan. I suggest you sell it for parts in ebay. People buys it. Then tell your friend to get a newer car with low mileage if he can afford to. Good luck and hope I helped a little. Don't get me wrong it's still a good looking car but if it keeps on breaking down do you think it's worth the trouble? Cheers.

You would think its not worth repairing. But it is.

Spending 1-2 thousand in repairs in only 7-8 car payments plus you have a new car....realistically

I would repair my celica if that ever happened

But if the car is in bad shape, and nobody liked it. Parts is fine, most people will sell it to the junk yard but they only give you $75-200 bucks. Many of your parts will sell really good on E-bay.

But those cars are real lightweight, and desired. Repainting and swapping a few parts will in fact save thousands in the long run

wish i had the money as it would make a good project car. swap in a 5.0 mustang engine with a 5spd trans, upgrade the suspension system to handle the weight and power(easy to do by the way), and perhaps install an after market body kit to liven things up, like the one stacy david installed on the show gearz, and you would have one nifty little car that was reliable, and good looking, and would indeed perform very well.

check out this site. www.monstermiata.com

If you really want a ride. This is the spot. If not, then you know that the new Miata's have a hard top convertible? Look at them.

Bad Kitty, Shame on You!!!

Your boyfriend's trust worthy, faithful, fun, sporty little gal has finally given up the ghost and you suggest that he kills her off!!

Tsk-Tsk-Tsk!!!

Now, treat him to a great evening, tell him that if he wants to fix her, he should. BUT, that after he does, it will probably not take to long before new brakes are needed or an exhaust, I think you get the idea.

Remember, Boys and their Toys. Please be gentle.
But, you are right, time for a complete rebuild or a new car.

If the rest of the car is is decent shape sure i would replace the tranny but if its rusted and or beat up just junk it becouse after you put that tranny in it its just going to be one thing right after another till you have put so much money into it you will never get your money back out of it.So you might better just cut your losses now and get rid of it.GOOD LUCK!
