My father had a Purple Heart in his serviceman`s trunk, which has since disappeared since his death. I believe it to have belonged to him or my Uncle. Neither would talk of their experiences from the war.

YOu have to fill out the information and Mail it in. In our day of instant internet stuff we fail to realize that these records are precious and only the kin can retrieve them.
Mind you there was a huge fire in St. Louis back in the 70's this destroyed a lot of veterans records but their basic info should be there along with what awards they received.

I've been where you are I got my dads service record on Valentines day after completing the forms and mailing them in. It took a few months, but don't you think that's worth it? He wouldn't talk about the war either, but now I know something of his experience

Contact your congressman. One thing though, for Purple Harts in WWII the only gave them out if you where shot or hit with shrapnel. Lots of air-crewmen and airborne where injured when parachuting in and did not qualify. Same thing for soldiers who where in vehicle accidents caused by enemy fire, unless you where hit you did not get one even if the truck you where in crashed when after the driver was shot. The rules have changed today, so I am not sure if he is legible or not.
