The Jesuit journal La Civiltà Cattolica observed: "It is misleading . . . to think that God, by means of demons, inflicts fearful torments on the damned like that of fire." It added: "Hell exists, not as a place but as a state, a way of being of the person who suffers the pain of the deprivation of God." Pope John Paul II said in 1999: "Rather than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy." As to the images of hell as a fiery place, he said: "They show the complete frustration and emptiness of life without God." Had the pope described hell in terms of "flames and a red-suited devil with a pitchfork," church historian Martin Marty said, "people wouldn't take it seriously."

“γεεννη”= Gehenna not hell are two different things.
Matthew 10:28 “And do not become fearful of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather be in fear of him that can destroy both soul and body in GE•HEN´NA.”
Mark 9:23 ““And if ever your hand makes you stumble, cut it off; it is finer for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go off into GE•HEN´NA, into the fire that cannot be put out”
Investiguate and find the right point.

Matthew 10:28 (KJV)
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Mark 9:43 (KJV)
43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:
Luke 16:23 (KJV)
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Revelation 20:10 (KJV)
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Well, based on the Bible, Hell is real and it's a horrible place or torment and punishment.

The rise in non-traditional denominations and beliefs is prompting many Christians to re-establish traditional doctrines such as Universalism. But your quotes simply state that the Medieval morality-play version of hell (so popular with Hollywood) is not theologically accurate.

I hope these people are right. There's only one thing worse than going to hell, and that is thinking you're going to heaven and ending up in hell. Preaching a non biblical doctrine is very dangerous. If hell IS only a state of deprivation of God, then I hope they're right... for their sake.

Nothing. Hellfire is doing its job. In fact, an Apache gunship carries 8 Hellfires.

They are wrong. I would hate ot have that particular doctrine proven the hard way....The Bible mentions Hell more often than it does heaven.

Those at the top of the church actually do realise that the idea of hellfire is, shall we say, just a bit insane.

Wow!
Thus proving that even the Pope can't be wrong all the time, thus proving the saying that no one is perfect.
Blessed Be!
