once you know the love of God you are able to truly understand love for one another. In the same way God shows us mercy, kindness, patience, forgivness, loyality and so much more we find ourselves able to give these same gifts to our neighbours because our love is not self seeking and our motivates are pure in the giving of ourselves and expecting nothing in return

Growing up I was taught it meant you had to love others and consider them more important than yourself. As an adult I've learned that you have to love yourself (a healthy love, not to the point of being prideful) so that you are able to love others....All others. The neighbor next door as well as the idiot that cuts you off in traffic.

All things being equal, to love yourself is the essence of Gods love manifested in one small bundle(sometimes not to small). We learn to cherish and honor ourselves--to seek appropreate council and develop as a complete individual.
To manifest those same traits to everyone around is the goal of a complete Christian.
One problem I've noticed--it seem we ask new christians to do these things--and sometimes fail to find out if they really do love themselves. It can be very hard to try to love someone when you don't know how to.
"Let a man examine himself" Before I can love you I must know how to love myself. Scripture will help

Good self esteem (not ego) leads to assertive and kind behavior and thus one must feel good about themselves before they actually know how to treat others right.

The 10 commandments are divided into two sections. The first four commandments are how we are to love God, the last six commandments are how we are to love our neighbor.

Romans 13:9
"For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

To love our neighbor we need to honor them as found in the 5th commandment, to preserve life as found in the 6th commandment, to keep ourselves chaste as found in the 7th commandment, to be charitable as found in the 8th commandment, to be honest as found in the 9th commandment and to desire good for our neighbor as found in the 10th commandment.
