Asylum = Best word for sanctuary as a refuge.

Receptaculum was also used, but was less common.

Sanctuary is derived from the Latin, sanctum, meaning holy. Even the meaning of sanctum as used in the English (ie, inner sanctum) refers to a special place that is secretly known or exclusive to a specific group or person.
