I would like to get a medium to large dog and have been looking at some rescue shelters in the area. I am drawn to bigger dogs more ( german shepard, boxer, lab, husky, ect.), but am worried about how such a dog might interact with the 2 cats already in the house (both about a year and a half old).
Am I asking for trouble here? Is there a breed of dog that is known for tollarance of cats? I am looking mostly at young puppies, and am hoping that the dog with learn to accept the cats as part of his "family". Any advice?
p.s. I am going to check out some boxer/ german shepard mix puppies tommorow that I really like

Here is a site that might help. They say a German Shepard and Boxer should be no problem. I have had German Shepard's and the cats were in control.

I have a black lab and she is really good with my 5 cats. Another good one is a golden retriever and a german shepard. I had a German shepard/Great Dane mix and that was the best dog... Took a lot of heat from my cat's, but loved them anyway. Thanks for going to a shelter to get a dog. You can ask there too. Might want to some test runs with the animals. If you have family/friends with dogs, bring them over and see how they re-act. For a period of time, they may not get along because of being new to each other, but they will get along in time... Good luck!

Okay you are asking a dog specialist,I own two completely different dogs,Love em both,they are my whole worlds,now as for your question.A german shepard is a breed that can tolerate cats to a extent,just don't put together in a less than large space,all shepards are not always the same in personalities,Boxers,No way will this work.Lab,good with any breeds of animals,husky's are not always the best pets if other animals are present.My pick of the animals that loves cats are Bassetts because they are only stubborn with people never cats,these hounds are something when it comes to tallent,but at the same time Bassetts are clowns and think the whole world is a circus.My second choice would be the Lab.Good Luck.

Boxers do very well with cats. My Boxer LOVED cats and would sleep and cuddle with them. I had 2 other dogs and 6 cats when i got her. Its funny she was dog aggressive towards dogs she didn't know and wanted to kill them but with cats she was always very gentle. I had her from the time she was 12 weeks to the age of almost 11 years old. She was the perfect dog once she was trained to get along with other dogs. Boxers too are well known to being great companions with children. Boxers are naturally gentle with small children. I also have a friend that has 2 boxers and they too have cats also and they all get along fine together.
You mentioned Husky's Not a good idea they love to chase and hunt cats and small animals. I have a friend that has Husy's and they don't do well with small dogs or cats. I've seen them go after a small dog and shake it like a ragdoll. Pretty scary

Most dogs will get along with cats as long as they have grown up together. You need to ask if the dogs you are looking at get along with cats. If they say they don't know, pass and look at another dog. Huskys if not brought with them is not a good choice. The puppies you're looking at sound good. It would be much better to get a puppy and your cats will show the puppy the ropes. At first they won't be happy and may hiss, but they'll be saying this is our home and our rules and it will all work out. I have cats, dogs and birds any they all get along. All the best;~}

How do your cats get along with dogs? If you are not sure, you may want to clip their nail tips and give them plenty of places up away from the pup where they can watch him bounce around.
Sight hounds (like greyhounds) are the most problematic with cats but IMO most puppies that are introduced to dog-loving (or tolerating) cats do just fine. The puppy may be happy to make new friends but the cats may disappear.

Well first of all, if you are getting a puppy then you won;t have a problem as long as you train it right. Secondly, any breed is good with a cat at any age as long as you are willing to train it correctly. I got my German Shepherd at 18 months and broke him of chasing cats in 2 weeks.

if u socialize the dog with other animals such as cats from a young age as a pup the dog should due fine. I've seen Pits who are bred to attack animals snuggle with kitties. Personally my lab gets along great with my cat.

my german shepherd was 2 yrs when we got her and we already had 2 cats. she has never shown the least bit of aggression toward them. they on the other hand hissed and spit like crazy until they realized she wasn't going to do anything to them. you'll probably experience some of that as well.
just ask at the shelter. they usually prescreen for that sort of thing. also dogs that have passed that initial puppy stage are a little calmer and less likely to chase.
