The Fork goes on the left and the knife on the right. To help you remember:
Fork (4 letters) = Left (4 Letters)
Knife (5 letters) = Right (5 Letters)

Sit at the table and face the plate.
Fork to the left, knife and spoon to the right.
Could be two forks to the left starting with the salad then the dinner.

Generally, a knife and spoon on the left and forks on the right. This is how it was taught to me in etiquette class. Now days, some people put them all across the plate etc., depends on how formal you want to be.

fork on left, knife on right... are you kidding? Really it goes smaller fork first for salad, then big fork, plate, knife, spoon. It also gets bigger than that but if your just trying to figure the fork and knife that should do for now.
