What do you think judging from this quote and site? And for those who are going to quote Surah 4, that is one of many mistranslations in the english Quran and in arabic, the word used "daraba" means to separate, as in leave the house.
"Since there are some in the Muslim community that believe it is halal to smack their wives around because the woman is the property of the man, an unislamic idea in the first place, I thought it would be good to send out this important reminder. I know many people would like to see this issue not talked about as it is airing our dirty laundry in public, but it must be talked about and dealt with as Allah commands us to stand up for justice even if it is against our ownselves. We in the Muslim community should not tolerate our sisters being abused in anyway and should actively take measures to insure that this abuse ceases."

It is forbidden in Islam to hit your wife with the twig of a basil leaf, the only thing a man can do is re-frame from sexual intercourse with his wife as a punishment.

NO! It is haram in the religion of Islam. A woman is respected by a man. The man's wife is the most prescious thing he has. She is not considered property. The man hardly ever hits his wife. My uncle he just glares at my aunt. So, there is hardly and hard feelings. The woman must respect the man of the house. I hope this answers your question. And don't talk anymore about the muffins... makes me hungry. =)

I hear ya on that one! There are definitely some stupid men out in the world that seem to think that's their excuse for slapping their wife around. And they will be answering for it on the Final Day!
In every faith there is always something that's misconstrued. Christianity has it's issues, Hinduism, Judaism, etc... We're human and thus we are not perfect. If we were then we wouldn't need a God.

It is absolutely a distortion of Islam to say that wife beating is endorsed in Islam.
Not only is wife beating not endorsed, it is strictly prohibited. Beating someone, whether a husband, wife, or child is unlawful. Beating someone is a form of abuse and Islam does not allow abuse.

No one is allowed to beat up their wives or anyone!
Not even a Muslim man.
Those who thinks violence is the way of life and by showing power to the weaker gender or person are the PURE COWARD!
added: And you 2 below me.....I suggest, you both go get a life!

According to my LIMITED knowledge of Islam, a Muslim man is allowed to beat his wife as a LAST RESORT only if she is disobedient to some certain laws or something. Men are NOT allowed to just randomly beat their lives.

No, and if I ever thought that misconception was true, I would never have converted or married a Muslim man.
