I believe you are asking what year Ford debutted with the Direct Injection Turbo version of the 7.3L engine, and the answer to that is late in 1994, as an early 1995 model year. As bikertrash already stated, Ford never did use a common rail type injection system up until just recently with the introduction of the 2008 6.4L twin turbo. All of these engines are Navistar engines by the way. The only two diesel engines that I'm aware of that are made by Ford, are the 6.6L and 7.8L inline 6s that were made for industrial use, and some of Ford's medium duty trucks of the 80's and early 90's. Hope this helps.

Ford has never used a common rail fuel system on a 7.3. The first 7.3 liter IDI engines came out in 87, they ran an injection pump and injectors like any other diesel of the period. In 94 they went to a high pressure oil operated injection system on the power stroke, the 6.0L engine used a revised version of this system. The 2008 6.4 liter Ford diesel is the first one to use a high pressure common rail fuel system.
