It what you have is called a "deviated septum" I can explain the surgery. The septum is the bone & cartilage that separates the left nostril from the right. If it is not straight, leaning more to one side than the other, it can block one of the nostrils enough that you will have trouble breathing through your nose, often frequent sinus infections, starting on the nattowed nostril side. It will deviate more as you get older. The surgeon will insist on a CT scan of your face/sinuses so he/she can see the extent of the deviation. The procedure is done in a hospital or surgical center.

The surgery involves going under general anesthesia (you will be knocked out completely so you don't feel a thing or even know what's going on). They will intubate you (put a tube down your throat to breathe, but you won't know it or feel it because of the anesthesia.

The doctor will work on the inside of your nose, so there will be no scar on the outside at all. They will have to gently break the bone between the nostrils and realign it to be straight. If there are any other bony or mucosal blockages, they will open the blockage.

Usually a packing (old packing used to be gauze) like a gel is put in your nose. Then they put a small tape across your nose to reinforce it. ) If packed with gel, it will slowly drip out over a few days. My doctor said I could gently blow it out it out if it was bothering me, but a little at a time, and very gently. Some doctors don't use any packing)

You wake up, and after the anesthesia has worn off, you will have some pain, but you will have pain medication to take. Some people get dark circles under their eyes, but my surgeon was excellent and I did not.
Healing time is about a week or two. The difference is amazing. You can breathe really well immediately.

I have to admit, for about 3 months, whenever it rained, my nose (the bone) ached ever so slightly (of course, I was about 34 when I had it done..age could have been a factor in that). But it is well worth having it done.

If you want to know exactly what packing you will have or have additional questions, call the surgeon's office and either he or a nurse can further explain it to ease any anxiety you may have about the surgery.
My best to you!

Quite a long time ago, I had my nose broken and have had problems since, like you with breathing, and I snored a lot.
I had day surgery on mine.
Had to go to the hospital a week or so before the op and have blood tests, talk to a nurse, had an ECG (because I'd had fibrillation once and they wanted to check I was OK)
Day of the op, husband dropped me off and I joined a lot of other people in just for the day with various surgeons
Was called to have a chat with the anaesthetist - lovely lady - she did a few more things like taking my blood pressure, etc.
Then called to change into a gown and dressing gown - my clothes went into a locker.
Called again - hopped onto a trolley, surgeon came and had a chat - are you OK, do you know what we are going to do, etc, and explained it all again, warning that although they were doing a straightening job I might have a lumpier bridge. Anaesthetist gave me an injection.
Woke up on a bed where I had to stay till I needed to have a wee. Husband already waiting for me - the hospital had called to say come and get me.
Next day had a phone call from a hospital nurse to check that I was feeling OK, etc.
Nose bled a bit for the best part of a week or so.
Easy peasy. Nothing to worry about. Had the best sleep I'd had in weeks and I can breathe better now and husband says I'm much quieter at night. Best of luck and hugs x

I have what is called a deviated septum. I would probably benefit from surgery also, but tomorrow it's an MRI for my right ear. I have no idea what to expect except some loud banging. They will give me ear plugs, &c. Perhaps there will be a way you can simply ask and get some answers. I know one thing, tomorrow, I am not going to put myself through working myself all up or getting anxious.

You probably have a deviated septum. I had one and had surgery to correct it. My surgery was pretty extensive. The doctor made an incision and had to raise my nose to see the septum and rebuild it. He also broke my nose. The surgery really wasn't bad at all. The worst part was my nose was packed for a week & I had to breathe through my mouth. It sounds really painful but it wasn't as painful as I thought it would be. It will take close to a year for the final shape of your nose to appear. Good luck. 2D

I had a deviated septum operation 3 years ago and would recommend it to you. I was unlucky in that they caught a vein and it went septic (just my luck) but i would really say go for it. I went in they put me to sleep when i awoke it was brilliant and i could breath through my nose for the first time in 30 years. It was only when they took my blood preasure that the problem arose. But soon sorted...All the best

If I were you I would stick with your old nose, hey it could be worse right? And you know who else had a nose job, Michael Jackson. He's like the potato head right, he probably has a whole collection of noses. Keep your nose man
