An activity you can spend some time talking.
Like go to an aquarium. Go to a zoo.
Go fishing. Something that will allow conversation.

You cannot communicate too much.

My son see his day every 3 weeks, sometimes his dad has cash and take my son places-but other times when he has no cash they kick a ball around, paint, board games, visit other family members and this is more fun because it's simple and not trying too hard or going over the top

Don't try to overcompensate. Instead, talk to him, be there for him and after breakfast, ask him what he wants to do. Spending time with you (doing whatever activity) and knowing you genuinely care and want to spend time with him, that you want to know what he is thinking, and that you have conversations that help to positively guide and shape who he becomes makes a difference. So I would say -- listen, be there, give him your time, your attention, respect, and love.

Everything else (whether it is fishing, going to a game, seeing the latest movie, kicking your butt when playing the latest PS3 video game, fixing a leaky faucet, tuning the car, cleaning the garage, whatever) is just icing.

Yeah, find out what he likes to do, or what you both will enjoy doing and then go for it.

Movies, dinner, go to see your favorite sports team, fishing, sailing, get the picture...be creative, but make the time worth while, it should be all about having Fun!

Do something he would like, the Zoo or an Amusement park or something of that nature. You could also have a (son's name) day where he is the center of attention and gets to do what he'd like to do.

Depending on his age, if he's old enough to miniture golf that's a good one. Or bowling. My 6yr old son loves both. If you don't want to spend much then go fishing. Sounds old school but the slow nature day may be cool to him......
