sorrow motivated purely by love of God is called perfect contrition. Perfect contrition is sufficient for the forgiveness of venial sins.

Following is the prayer called The Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry
for having offended Thee,
and I detest all my sins,
because I dread the loss of Heaven
and the pains of Hell,
but most of all because they
offend Thee, my God,
Who art all-good and deserving
of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help
of Thy grace to confess my sins,
to do penance
and to amend my life. Amen.

In a way, others who have posted to this question are correct. The contrition itself does not forgive sins, but when we show God that we are truly sorry, He will forgive us.

For the redeemed, the work of forgiveness is already done. Those who are saved, of the elect, the ecclesia, are totally and completely forgiven, nothing more needs to be done. When we sin as a believer, we seek forgiveness in order to restore fellowship with God and acknowledge and agree with Him concerning our sin. Our forgiveness in terms of salvation is not based on our actions or asking forgiveness, the work is completed.

we only love God because he first loved us. To say we love God on our own accord is a lie. His love was showed to us when we were yet still sinners - Christ died for us. His love initiated - He opens the eyes of the blind and we can only see because of Him. Over and over through the bible we find that God finds us - we don't find Him - we don't have the capability of finding Him. So, we accept his gift of forgiveness and salvation by faith. For it is by faith we are saved - not of works (penance for example) LEST ANY MAN SHOULD BOAST.

God does it all - we believe. Even our faith is a gift from God. Give Him all the Glory!

Repentance, doing a 180 degree turn from sin to God, is what forgives sin... Sorrow should turn to joy when God forgives sin...

Conviction - is God's love helping us to return to Him.

Nope, only by the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross, not sorrow, can your sins be forgiven.

No. The destruction of the sin (Christ risen) is the forgiveness of sin, not merely feeling sorry and then sinning again.

"And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. "
