I have been playing golf for a long time. Had my handicap down to 10. Happy with every aspect of my game except for my chipping and sandplay. Have major yips with chipping. More often than not when I need to chip I will either look up too quick or just hit a bad shot. This is very upsetting & frustrating because of this I am usually scoring in the high 80's to low 90's instead of low 80's like I'm used to. Seriously thinking of giving up the game that I Love. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

short game, chipping especially should be your bread and butter.

Chipping is all about feel, if you do not have this you need to develop soft touch.

Where are you based?

I recommend going for a half hour lesson, i am a pro and there are many ways to improve your chipping. Just go for the lesson

I hear you on this one - chipping is important - the number one thing is to make sure you are playing the ball off of your back foot - you are guaranteed to catch the ball first (not the ground) if you play it back in your stance - also open your stance and grip down to the steel on your grip - if you carry 3 wedges, I would used the highest lofted wedge you have because 1) it's a shorter club which allows you to get close to the ball and 2) you can be more aggressive with your chip and fly the ball close to the hole without a lot of run out - if you are already a 10 handicap now, when you work out your shipping woes and improve your putting you will be close to scratch - I am a 10-12 handicap myself and it is very challenging to shave off strokes when your handicap is that low - good luck

Overall short game is the reason my game is where it is now. I am not concerned when I hit a wayward drive and/or a terrible approach shot. I place the ball in the back of my stance for chipping so it comes out lower and will check up and finish near the hole. If I am not 3 feet or closer, it is poor execution. Make sure the wrists are firm so you don't flip them at impact. That may be your issue. It is like putting. A pendulum like movement. Keep the head still. It is mostly feel. You have to practice the movement to get the feel of it.

sand i cant realy help with .
as far as chiping all you need is about 60 yds of space at home and a galvinized wash tub ,fill the tub with watter about half way (this will prevent bounce outs) .then practice chiping into the tub from diferent places in the yard 'as you get better at hiting the tub you will also see an inprovement in your short game . remember on the corse there will be forward momentom as you get better get rid of the watter and try to keep the ball in the tub
by the way if you have kids ,do they have a sand box? hint hint

Hello
I m Michael Phal teaching pro in Luxembourg(Europe)
I teach my student sometimes the reverse grip ,meaning the left hand below the right, and have them concentrating on leading the back and thru shot with the back left hand.
Good luck on your game

If you are a 10 handicap there's nothing I can tell you that will help. I'd only make it worse with my tips. Sorry.
