I'm wondering if I should write a letter to my friend or if I should wait until I recover from my cold.

That question is not as daft as some seem to think.
Some viruses have the ability to take up a complex chemical state and can lie dormant, like dust, for years before something triggers them back into virile activity.
Maybe one day, when we understand more about the common cold, your question will be answered.
Meantime it will have to lie in your answers pending box.

Of course not. A germ requires a host to survive. It will not survive on an inanimate object, well, not for very long. Germs thrive on moist, damp, and dark environments but, need a cell ( or a person) to reproduce and grow.
