I have taken my cat to the vet for smaller things, and have discovered that it costs a ton of $ for them to tell me what I thought I knew anyway.
I have been applying bacitracin for his cut, which seems to have helped, even though he keeps licking after I have applied it. Would cleaning it with peroxide as well as the bacitracin be better, or would that not be healthy for him? And please, no nasty comments on me not caring enough about my cat to take him to the vet...he goes every year.

while i was working in a vet clinic i found a little kitten that had been attacked by something and her arm was ripped open.. when i took her with me to work the next day they told me the same thing and i was expecting them to put stitches in.. but they just rinsed it out and i was told to clean it with peroxide everyday... vet bill with my discount came out to 120 bucks.. and my male cat gets into cat fights every now and then i always clean it with peroxide and they heal fine.

Dear Kitty-

Yes you can clean the wounds with peroxide. You need to perform the same dressing procedures on cats and dogs that you would for yourself. Keep in mind that you may need some assistance from a friend.

If the wound is in the thick fur you are going to need to shave the area in order to get to it and that can mean a wrestling match. In this case I have wrapped my cats in a large towel and cut a spot in the towel to reveal the wound so I can treat it. Yes, you will need some help, and the animal is going to make some noise and be very unhappy until you can get the wound dressed and covered.

I would suggest having one of those goofy looking cone collars standing by, because when you are done the animal is going to want to lick the spot and pull at the bandage to get it off.

If the wound requires stitches like a bursted abcess, then you are going to need to hit the vet and have the wound irrigated, cleaned and stitched.

As for the scratches , I have always taken care of those my self using hydrogen peroxide and neosporin to finish the job.

I hope that helps you out.

Yes, but not a deep wound--that needs to be seen by a vet. You can apply the peroxide by pouring or using a clean cotton cloth, if necessary. Good luck with your cat.

Know what you mean about vet fees. Peroxide is fine. Try leaving off the Bacitracin and let air get to the wound.

Peroxide is OK for first cleaning a wound, but used daily is actually irritating to tissue. If it is just a surface wound, then neosporin will help fine. If it appears deep or infected, you really need a vet visit.

It honestly depends on the size of the wound. I always just call my vet for advice. I have never been told to bring my kitten in unless they really are concerned but I have a good relationship with my vet.
