You are in your basement. That is you are "below" your home, beneath your comfort, safety zone. Even without the snakes, you have put yourself in a place, less than the higher or upper part of your thinking and being.
Even if it's a comfy, familiar basement; it is, in this dream, the basement of your mind--beneath what you think is proper, not part of the world with which we present a face, a place into which we don't invite important guests, but usually use for the more personal aspects of our lives.
I say all this, because I don't know your age or experience, but one cannot--even those of us, who don't usually go to Freudianism symbolism--deny that snakes stand for male genitals. They weren't dangerous to you, at first, just kind of annoying, like bugs--itching at you, flying around you, but you didn't want them, anyway, and tried to get rid of them.
Yet there was one, in particular, a light green one with a rattle on the end of a blackish tail. It didn't frighten you, but rather "occurred to you" that you should be cautious, that rattlesnakes--if this was one, are poisonous.
Again, this depends very much on your age and where you are in relation to sex and virginity. (Not that we don't have these feelings and fears as we get older, also--especially in a change in relationships.)
I think it's clear that you are dealing with the fear of sex; it doesn't overwhelm you; it's more of an annoyance right now, but you see (and I love rattle--like a baby's toy) that it COULD cause problems. You didn't want to think about those problems; you decided to stop killing the things, and came out of it. In other words, you want to make peace with these fears of men, boys and sex.
You don't want to be afraid, and you're aware that you can make pretty good peace by ignoring the whole issue right now (by killing it off--as bugs, which are sometimes symbols of our relationship with our mother), yet there is one, one familiar one, I feel, the light green--what does that color remind you of?--the rattle "on the end of its tail," and its blackish color, that warns you it won't go away that easily; that this is something to be dealt with, but you are afraid to do that, so you either forget the rest of the dream or you stop dreaming.
Because your tone is not that of a nightmare--you didn't see the rattlesnake and freak out--because the tone is more of control, then not so much control, then a kind of "ah shucks, this could be a problem," I do see it very much about dealing with an issue--and I do think it's sex--that you want to be able to deal with in your own time, at your own pace, and without dangerous surprises.
The blackishness of the rattle, and that this snake was on your couch says that this is the snake that represents your father; it could, of course, also be someone else with whom you were on the couch in what, at first, seemed safe and cozy, but then wasn't. (In Jungian symbolism, or is it still Freud, a black man in a dream usually stands for one's father.) I'm not saying this is, but these are male genitals, and you may have had an uncomfortable, questioning moment, you may have unresolved Electra feelings toward your father figure.
I wonder if there was an event that seemed sexually charged, an innocent moment perhaps, yet felt as if something was off, and this father or father figure was wearing something light green, or if this person often wears something light green, or if you were wearing that color at the time.
Hmmmmm. Only you can know this.
Again, your age is a factor, or your recent experiences with men or a man, that will explain why the snake keeps appearing to you. It is clearly unresolved sexual issues, be they of desire, of not wanting desire, of confusion regarding something new, or something someone else may be pushing for which you don't feel ready. That is what I get, and you want the help of your mother (if even just a metaphorical connection to the woman/girl in you that is like her) to diminish the power of these male beings.
As for the book, you are trying to learn something or simply to be by yourself, alone, unintruded, uninvaded, penetrating pages of thought, not fighting off intrusive beings that don't "belong" where you are right now.
ONE LAST THOUGHT:
Bugs are often associated with drugs, especially people getting off of drugs, and snakes are sometimes hallucinations that come with drug withdrawal; you may be in conflict regarding the use of drugs and realizing that they might be more dangerous than they so casually seem, when only "itching" or being a "nuisance" in your (or someone you love's) reality. People CAN be poisoned by drugs, and interestingly, when being asphyxiated in death, it's called, "the death rattle."

Snakes in many cases symbolize "fear". However, in your case, it symbolize some trouble, or annoying matter to you rather than just fear.
Basement = privacy
reading a book = doing own business
snakes = annoying matter, interruption, interference
light green and rattle = alert, noise, warning from others
In your life, you may be experiencing some interference from others. It could be from Siblings, friends or parents. You projected them as snakes because you found them annoying. Projecting as green and rattle symbolizes this kind of annoying matter may deal with noise or some image. Examine your life, you will know better what happened lately to you that caused you to dream like that.

On the other hand, this could be a health dream too.
Snakes are often seen on a staff (representing healthcare) and the color light green is associated with healing.
If this is the case, you will want to pay close attention to lower intestine "annoyances." This is especially true if you use antacids alot or even stool softeners. Blackish from the tail end is also a concern.
Just another angle... sorry if it's too much.

basement = soul, past, ([human] nature, hidden/forgotten, refuge, secret, discouragement or depression ... etc
book = word, record, heart (of man), rememberance, conscience, learning ... etc
snakes = deception, threat, danger, hatred, slander, etc can also mean health/healing depending on the context.
rattlesnakes = words, threats, warning, alarm ... etc
couch = rest, at ease, contentment... etc
green = life, envy/jealousy, money, immaturity, flesh..etc
this is just an opinion.... were you ever in a bad relationship? it doesnt necessarily have to have been a romantic relationship, (but most likely was) but it was one that was like, an on-again/off-again type of a deal? This dream could be a warning to you to NOT get back into that relationship.
You're at a place in your life where you are....in a period of "learning" and growing (perhaps from past mistakes). You're essentially "searching" deep within yourself and working on changing some things.... (i.e., in the basement reading a book).....perhaps in terms of dealing with people and in relationships. The snakes represent those relationships, and those things that are not healthy and that you need to cut off, or remove out of your life. (this is why in the dream you feel the need to chase them down and kill them). The rattlesnake is significant of a warning. in my opinion it represents a person (or thing, but i think a person) in your life that is nothing but destructive. That it was on the couch represents it /that person is threatening your peace of mind and your stability by just their presence there. (in your life) You're thoughts in the dream of the necessity to be careful is essentially you realising the danger in that relationship. as, it is posionous to you... it is deadly.
whomever or whatever that rattlesnale represents needs to be completely cut out of your life.
This is just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

The snake represents lies and deceptions. By you chasing the snakes you are putting to death lies and deceptions which are trying to come against you in your life. The green snake with the rattle. The rattle lets you know to proceed with caution and to make you aware of danger. The green color represents "life" and "prosperity". So the snake represents a deception which has come to deceive you that your prosperity might be hurt.

Sorry. Before I created Jesus, I attempted to create an incubus to head down and impregnate Mary, nevertheless it became out to be homosexual and no longer interested. This is while I invented the Holy Spirit. Anyway, this incubus appears plenty like Jesus, so that is typically who you noticed, no longer the truly Jesus.

Snakes in a dream are warnings of of various troubles, treachery, or obstacles. If you managed to kill them all, it is a sign that you will succeed in spite of any hostile opposition.
