Declawing a cat is extremely cruel and damaging to the cat's psyche.

Entice the kitten to play around the post by dragging your fingers up & down the post and putting toys on the top. It will soon catch on. Have a post in each room where you are concerned about the furniture and have plenty of other toys for it to play with.

A loud handclap will often deter a kitten from using the furniture; they will eventually learn the word "no" if it is repeated often and firmly enough.

Tell him no in a firm way and that should stop him instantly and then take him to the desired scratching post. If he is an indoor cat you can buy something called softclaws which will allow him to do scratching and jumping etc but will save your furniture. But only for indoor cats! Try www.spuk.com
The worked a treat when my indoor cats attacked my bullmastiff.

I used to do this, I would put the scratching post in front of the leg of the couch they loved to scratch and then each week move it further and further away from the couch until it's in the position you want and then they scracth that rather than the couch.

Hope this helps.

Try putting cat nip on the scratching post or putting the post in front of the areas that he scratches at. I had my kitten declawed and he still pretends to scratch on my bed and on my couch. It's a natural behavior which you really cannot teach not to scratch.

oftentimes, there is not any longer a lot trailing neccessary. each cat i've got ever had took to the container on their own....my men even "sprayed" interior the muddle container whilst they to that age (to my marvel and alleviation). merely confirm the kitten knows the place to discover the container....different than that, you may desire to go away the kitten in a small room (like a showering room, or a great cardboard container) for countless classes of time with the muddle container untill they discern it out....different than that...in case you do seize it going to the bathing room, at present place it interior the muddle container. countless the time, even kittens will scratch around the section they want to bypass until now they bypass, so hear for the scratching. stable success!

take his little paws and push on them so the nail comes out and take him to the post and scratch it on there for him every two hours or so. after he is done, pat his head and tell him good boy and give him a treat of some sort. he'll get the jist of it in a week to 10 days if you do that with him NO LESS than every four waking hours, but i suggest every two.

it woul depend on age....if it's less than 6 mos. saying things like "no" in a firm voice or any of that suff will not work...in stead u can put something ( try peanut butter...not 2 much!) that gives a scent and attracts the cat and show that you are pleased with him/her by petting it and being affectionate....there are also pet safe sprays that makes your pet not like the area you want them not to go to.....smells that will smell bad 2 them but pleasant 2 u...

Hope that helps!

You don't they just train you not to look

Try using double sided sticky tape on things other than the scratch post to deter them, they don't like the fact that it is sticky (it really works), and physically show them (with their paws not your hands) where you will let them scratch

spray some katnip on the post and just keep putting the kitten to it and scratching its arms up and down it- to show it how!
