Most tourist brochures have information in English, Chinese and Japanese on it. There won't be a problem with a language barrier for you.

Tours such Great Adventures http://www.greatadventures.com.au/ to go out on the reef also have guides that speak your language on board and to help you at the counters ...

Sounds like you speak and write English just fine.

For what to do in Cairns go to
http://www.welcometocairns.com.au/ (I know their tourism booklet/brochure has got different languages printed in it) You will see it everywhere in Cairns, just take one they are free.
or

When you get to Cairns, go to the Esplanade - along there among the restaurants are alot of tourist shops and a big visitor center. They have EVERYTHING, free brochures to pick up in what ever language you desire.

The hotel or motel you are staying in will have a complete range of brochures advertising tours of every size, price and category. The major areas for trips are the Atherton tablelands, the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, and the great Barrier Reef. Check out the brochures for those that cater to specific languages - there are definitely Japanese language tours, for instance.
