i have read lots of horror stories about dresses being made from scratch often cost more than if they had bought the dress already made.

when you have a vision in your mind, it will not be the same as if someone makes it. you can never convey it enough for someone to completely understand.

but when you are dress shopping, you tend to find THE ONE! it is your dream dress and you are happy.

When I was looking for a dress to be made for me I picked out this pattern:

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5001.htm

And I got quotes from various dressmakers, I found that just because I said it was for my wedding they quoted at least £500 (It's not even a traditional wedding dress) I then asked for quotes saying that this dress was for a garden party, low and behold I got quotes of around the £200 mark, things tend to cost a lot more when people know it's for a wedding. Personally I do feel mine was worth £200, the dress maker has adapted the bits of the pattern I did not like (the sweetheart neck was too sweetheart for me) and she has really put a lot of time and effort into it, whatever you decide to do I hope you find the dress of your dreams.

It depends. Most bridal shops have the ability to make your designer dress in a bit cheaper fabric this saving a bride MUCH money.
So, finding a seamstress or tailor that specializes in this type of dressmaking might be a really good idea.
You will need to do some research in your area.

It's fun to dream, isn't it? It is often cheaper to buy than to make a wedding dress. You will need to have a seamstress who has done that type of sewing before, you will need to source your fabric, trim and underpinnings and you will need to find a pattern that is similar to the dress you saw and be confident that the seamstress knows how to alter a pattern. It's up to you. If you REALLY feel strongly that the dress you saw in "a like magazine or something" is the dress for you, go for it. Expect to pay at least $20.00/hour for the seamstress' time and in excess of $20.00/yard for the fabric. have fun!!

Well if you get a famous designer...it would be in the thousands. But if you find a regular taylor, it would be in the hundreds. You have to take in to consideration what kind of material is being used. I got my prom dress made for under 200 bucks, and the material was not that great.

It is not cheap. It would depend what you want the dress to look like. If you want alot of lace, sequins, and pearls sewn on, that is all done by hand and they usually charge by the hour. One thing is, you will have a one of a kind dress.

Unless the dress is Vera Wang or some high end brand it would be cheaper and most likely look better just to buy it.
