My husband has been in the Army 14 years and at one point we were discussing going to Japan if it was offered to us... we decided against it....Camp Zama..but you really need to think about going to Japan...they are a weight restricted tour, you arent allowed to take your car if its bigger then what they suggest, they suggest you buy a cheap one there, we were told we werent allowed to take the majority of our furniture, that most of housing comes furnished. Im glad we havent ever had orders to Japan, wouldnt mind going just dont want to leave 90% of our belongings behind.

Unless he is going to extend for a 3 years on board and is at least an E4 he cannot change his orders anyway from unaccompanied to accompanied. She must undergo an overseas screening both medical & dental and it has to be granted. Now if he had accompanied orders and she chose not to go he would still have to be there 3 years and might not qualify for BAH or Family Separation at all. There is no BAH in Japan it is called OHA and is only based on the rent that is paid in a rental contract that is approved. If he is in barracks or on the ship then he doesn't get it. He can get BAH based on her zip code which he will have to send her on allotment if that is what he wants to do. He would also qualify for Family Separation of $250 per month after he has been gone longer than 30 days. Now if she can go then she is missing an incredible opportunity. The bases, the culture, a chance of a lifetime.

There is government housing in Camp Zama. Sagamihara is not the most interesting place to live for 3 years but it is easy to use mass transportation (the subway/train system) to get to Tokyo. I love Japan.
One small correction: I loved Japan. Haven't been there for a few years, but all my memories are great ones (although the occasional ground shaking was a little disconcerting) .

Yes. Those are accompanied tours.
You can view all installations (for all branches) and all info you may want or need to know about them (like school systems, housing, etc.) at afcrossroads.com
There is also Camp Torii on Okinawa. It's on the beach. I was stationed at Kadena and loved it.

if he gets Accompanied orders and you can pass the overseas screening, then yes you will be able to move there. whether or not you get on base housing will depend on the bedroom entitlement, his paygrade, and the waiting list. you may have to live out in town, but you are given the overseas version of BAH.

Yes, you can go with him if he is on an accompanied tour of duty, if not, then the answer would be no.

it depends on the base (where in Japan it is) and the length of PCS. ( if it's 18 mnts probably not, but 2 yrs or more, yes.)
