Geeks go through computers pretty fast & frequently upgrade. Are there any established organizations that take "older" computer parts, assemble them into working machines, and donate them to poor kids, etc?

I'd like to volunteer my time/money if so. I'd be particularly interested in groups like this in the Los Angeles area.

Yes, I saw a guy on CNN Heroes that does this for a living.
Here's one in the UK which does similar work.
Try Google or Yahoo for your area.

We have several organizations that do this in our community~ I'm almost thinking that you could find the name of agencies in LA by calling either City of LA Public Works or a Hazardous Waste collection site; these agencies are all networked and know where stuff can be recycled for charity.

I'm sure there are. Call the reference librarian at the largest library branch...they should have that info.

In the Portland, Oregon area the organization is called Free Geek.

Yep they sure do. They also pocket the best stuff for themselves, or sell it on eBay. Some harvest the hard drives for personal ID theft stuff and credit card numbers. If U volunteer there u can do the same. Good luck!
