Choosing either a girl or boy puppy is more a matter of personal taste than anything else. Contrary to popular myths, a male pup will not necessarily grow up to be more aggressive than a female. Neither will a female be guaranteed to be easier to handle, or more 'loving' than a male.

The personality of the puppy will depend a lot on the temperament and purpose of the breed itself and the personality of the individual puppy (and also it's parents, as genetics definitely play a part)

Here's a couple of things to think about though. If you already have a dog, make the second one of the opposite sex, as two dogs of the same sex tend to 'squabble' more. If you pick a female, be aware that unless you spay her she will 'come in season' at least twice a year. The resulting blood loss can be messy and spoil your furnishings and rugs unless you confine her to one room or use 'doggy diapers' especially designed for this occasion! You'll also have to deal with her 'admirers' who will be attracted by the pheromone-signals your female is sending out.

A male, if left un-neutered will have a tendency to 'spray' to mark his territory - not so much of a problem if he confines it to outdoors, but that's not always the case. He may also have the desire to wander all over the neighborhood (or further afield) in search of a pheromone-laden female of his own!

When you choose a puppy, it's much more important that you choose a breed that's a 'good fit' with your personality and lifestyle and a puppy that has the potential to live up to your expectations (eg. jogging partner, agility competitor, lap dog etc) than it is whether it's a male or female.

Don't buy frfom a pet store. I would think hard about a rescue. Though an admirable act, rescuing, Shibas are not the easiest of breeds and with rescues one does not always know what "baggage" is coming home with the dog...problems from poor training, ill treatment. So think hard and really study the individual dog before just taking it because it is a Shiba.

Male/female. The personalities vary SO much from breed to breed! In some breeds, I chose a male, in others a female.

That is what you to a respectable, educated breeder for. You are buying their wisdom and knowledge as well as the puppy.

It depends more on the individual dog then on the sex. We've had many female dogs, all wonderful but each with a different personality. The same is true for the male dogs we have known.

If you are adopting from a shelter, they should be able to help you find the best fit for you.

It depends. If you don't plan on getting your ***** fixed then she'll have 'periods' and come into heat...Plus, The chance of pregnancy. You won't make any money from it...think of all the vet bills for deworming, shots, check ups, etc. Also, Bitches pee while squating (usually) and this destroys grass really easily. Girls are also prone to like men better.

Boys can get a 'lip stick' if you don't get them neutered, can go very mental around girls and become very dominant. But other wise...I prefer boys. :D As they like girlies best and that's what I am. lol!

I also agree a rescue dog is so much better. You can sometimes get rescue puppies or ones that are only a year or two old. It's the best choice! They're MUCH cheaper, usually come fixed, with their shots, dewormed, etc. Plus, You may be saving a life!! :)

Just remember to fix them either way. We don't need anymore unloved, abandoned puppies in the world!

If you're planning to have your dog fixed, it's a little cheaper -- and less invasive -- for a male dog. But either way, you should have them fixed. With male dogs, it will supress the instinct to wander for mating. And of course with female dogs, it will help control the pet population and prevent them from periodically going into heat.

You should go to your local shelter and adopt one, save an animals life rather then go buy one from an individual owener or pet store. All animals are sweet and loving. Save a life!

The puppy will be spayed/neutered so male / female isn't going to be that much of an issue.. if find if you are a new trainer, you can make more mistakes with a male and get away with it, where females tend to want you to know your business ;)
I find males a little easier to housetrain than females. I find males want to please you more than females. But I like the more independant side of the female myself.

Males have a better temperment, females are to grouchy with other dogs and females think that they're the boss of everything.

Boys are more fun and loving. They have better personalities and are less trouble in the long run.
