hi-before u fill in the hole go buy a large container of red pepper flakes like u use on your pizza.put a lot in the hole and put alittle dirt on top.when he digs it up he won't like what he gets!or cut a piece of chicken wire place it over the hole cover with a little dirt. when he digs he won't like the way it feels on his feet.or u can crate him as punnishment or buy him toys.there is a toy u can buy at a pet store it looks like a bell and u can hide dog treats inside. it takes a lot of effort to get the treat so it keeps him busy! u could go to a dollar store like dollar tree, they have a variety of cheap toys and stuffed animals.good luck!

My dog had the same problem! It actually does matter what the size of your dog is. I have a pug (toy sized) and she likes to dig as well. The smaller the dog, the easier it is to make them stop, because they are more intimidated by punishment, scolding, etc.. If you have a big dog, you have to take more of an action. Every time they start to dig, you might have to take them inside, or to a solid surface that they can't penetrate. If this doesn't work, you can fill in the holes with logs, and put the dirt back in. (Much easier than filling all the dirt back up!) I hope my answer helped!

Dogs dig because for several reasons. It's fun, they're bored, they're hot, they're chasing a critter. Don't leave the dog outside alone. If he tries to dig, you need to be there to tell him "no dig!". Making a digging pit area and burying toys and treats may help him learn to only dig in that area, but if you're not there to supervise he can dig anywhere he wants. Also, fence off the areas you don't want him to dig in and then the rest is "his" yard.

My dog digs in the dirt too. We think its because of the sprinklers. She sees them when they come up from the ground and turn on. then she digs them to play with them i guess. well good luck

Some dogs love to dig and it's tough to get them to stop. At the humane society I work with, we built sandboxes for the diggers and hide toys and treats in them and let them dig away. Keeps them out of places they shouldn't dig and lets them indulge their favorite activity.

One thing that definately works is.. put his poop (use a shovel) in the hole (or area) he is digging and he will not dig in that spot again... Guaranteed! I am a dog owner and have done this successfully.

Try some discipline, try to explain your dog what is wrong and right and consequences that may be added. Sure they don't really understand but with a bigger bond, it may listen. But for the first few days of this explanatory process, try and convince it some treats.
