The Bible doesn't say it in so many words, but we are to renew our minds. So what goes in, will sometime come out. For example, if you worked around people that only spoke profanity, then after a while, you would tend to do the same. So, I would be careful of the words, first. Second, the music itself can be a problem. So there is plenty of Christian songs, whether classic, or contemporary. Older secular songs aren't as bad as most newer ones. Go back in to the 1940's for some better ones.

First of all the word is "secular" not sectlar or sectular. Second of all there are many things that we do in this world that do not necessarily glorify God but are not bad things. Of course there is a lot of music out there that can be damaging to your psyche but you've taken it too far. You can still be a devout Christian without being a psycho and only answering to the Bible. The Bible was meant to help us... not become the focus of our worship. The Bible doesn't have all the answers!!! It's not going to tell you whether or not you're allowed to listen to jazz music or not!! c'mon people... use common sense.

Learn to make your own decisions in life. That doesn't mean you should put off all of your beliefs but it does mean that you can learn to think for yourself.

The Bible doesn't say anything about it. But in general, music that glorifies sin is not the type of music that Christians should be listening to. You can't be giving an "amen" to a song that's about going out and getting drunk and committing fornication for example.

You know what is sin in the Bible. If the music glorifies worldly things: materialism, lust, greed, murder, idolatry, vanity, harlotry, etc. then you know that it is not good and it is not of God nor follows the principles of righteous living. You know, mostly all music nowadays.

Eventually, as you can tell by many things going on today, that kind of poison slowly pollutes life and leds minds and hearts down destructive paths. The power of life and death are in the tongue as the Bible tells us, so why would you listen to music by musicians that spew out death in their lyrics all day. Use wisdom.

I dunno, I'm an atheist, and I was listening to heavy metal and all that before I went atheist (a good point in my life actually) and so...just to ask a question here...those who say that music should 'Glorify Him' that means music such as...'Don't Want To Miss A Thing' by Aerosmith...'Hakuna Matata' from the Lion King, and any music other than Christian (they killed Rock 'n Roll with Christian rock, killed Rap with same thing, and now they're trying to make "Christian Metal'...ew...) but all the ones I listed above don't 'Glorify Him' so you don't listen to it or don't like it...then what would you listen at your wedding? Or whats your love song, "Praise Him" (if it's a song then by whoever artist) I'm just wondering...and for all the music that doesn't say 'I love Jesus' or that says "God this or God that' don't listen to it, don't bash other peoples likes.

I have long disagreed with a lot of Christians who want to divide music down the line:

1. It mentions God and Jesus in just about every verse. Christian music.

2. It doesn't mention God and Jesus in just about every verse. NON-Christian music.

As a Christian you have much freewill. I sincerely believe that IF you are a true Christian that you think about God ALL THE TIME. So, why is it that the music most be soooooo overtly hammering home God, God, God? Let's say you like Mozart. For me, I believe Mozart was a musical genius. WHERE do such gifts come from? God! I can appreciate the music as a gift from God to the people by way of Mozart. EVEN if Mozart was an atheist, I know that God created him and gave him his talent. So, the mere fact that Mozart doesn't credit God means NOTHING to me. I do.

I wouldn't encourage a Christian to feel equally free to listen to all forms of music all the time. I mean, punk rock, head banger music, gansta rap, and such is pretty negative. I mean, even when I do hear this garbage, it doesn't threaten my faith. It's just a little too far from God for me to feel comfortable with it. But Whitney Houston sweet, Celine Dion sweet, and such. Just read your Bible, attend a good Bible-believing church, and pray for wisdom about such things. I trust IF you are listening to music that is displeasing to God, that He'll let you know about it. God is many things, but shy is not one of them.

Lord bless!

Don't overdo it. Thats what i do. And don't listen to stuff that goes directly against God (i used to love Slayer, Brujeria, Krisium etc before i converted. Now i avoid at any cost listening to it, i dont miss it).

I Still really really like rock'n roll. And i don't think its ok to deprive yourself from culture just because your a christian, on the contrary.

thats it

Don't censor yourself.
Listen to any music you're curious about and form your own opinions.
...and I think the word you're looking for is "secular", which doesn't imply it's against anyone's god, just that it doesn't necessarily pertain to religion or spirituality.

All of the "Contemporary Christian" music is just warmed over "secular" music. By the way you need to read Tielhard de Chardin's critique on the otherworldliness of Christians.

it is unholy and un-Christian-like to listen to music that contains sex, profanity, violence, swearing, etc. Our mind, heart, and spirit should be renewed and focused on Christ in the Holy Spirit and the virtues of love, chasity, modesty, patience, etc.
