it does vary among states........ask the person adminstering the test or the HR for the agency you have applied with.

sometimes it even varys among applicants. a friend of mine and i were both officers at the same prison. i heard back from the state with a date for interview 3 weeks after my test. my friend.......10 months. the difference: his previous employers didn't respond to verify employment to the state as quickly as mine did. this was in texas about 8 years ago.

in texas the test is mainly a spelling, counting, and memory test. the interview is more of a 'what would you do in this situation' deal. my friend did both his test and interview before i did so i knew exactly what questions to expect.

of course, in texas, the pay is so low, the job is very high risk, and the need for officers is so great that right now that they pretty much take you if you are a citizen, have a GED or HS diploma, and have a pulse.

good luck!

What state and which agency are you applying for? There is a big difference depending on which agency you are applying for. The rule of thumb is that after you take the test they will contact you within the next week or two to set you up for the next portion of the process. If you do not pass, they may wait until the process is complete before advising you that you were not selected. Once you take the test, ask the agency about when you should expect to hear back from them.

Given each state is different in it's operations of departmental government operations, I'd look into contacting your state's Corrections Department Human Resource office and ask them if about the specifics on if there are time constrained testing involved.
