Your lodger is paying to stay in that room, therefore you have no right to enter without speaking to them first. Your lodger also has a right to be in the room when you retreive the item.
I am assuming you would not like it if your lodger went into your bedroom without talking to you first, the same applys for you.
I used to lodge with a woman and I had my own bathroom. She would repeatedly go into the bathroom and move my stuff about. This really p*ssed me off as I was paying for the priviledge of having my own bathroom. I never went into her ensuite and moved stuff about what gave her the right to move my belongings?

I would ask them if they could get you the item or if they minded if you went in and got it I would feel it totally wrong to just go in and get it at the end of the day they are paying for the lease of that room!

If you have a guest in a private room, it is their temporary haven. I would definitely mention that I would be retrieving something from the room. It's my right to enter a room on my property, but it's courteous to respect people's boundaries when they visit or are paying guests.

It's definitely better to ask them and not sneak in when they're gone. If the border ever found out you're going to his room when he isnt there-there would be all sorts of reprecussions.

I think it's a good idea to just ask for it back, rather than going into their room. You have to respect their privacy.
