Red wines can be anywhere from fruit forward (which can, to a palate used to drinking drier reds, be considered sweet) to dry and highly tannic, regardless of the varietal. As an example, Zinfandel (which is a red grape) can be fruit forward and jammy or it can be bold and spicy, depending on the vintner and the region. Made as a blush style, Zinfandel can retain sweeter strawberry or raspberry notes, but it will not be cloying.
Ask your local wine purveyor and sample some wines. Every palate is different and the level of residual sugar picked up by each palate is different. Explain to them what you have had and what you liked about it. They should be able to help you find what you like.

If you want really sweet red wine, try Port. Port is partially fermented red wine fortified with Brandy, so it is high in alcohol content but also very sweet. You can get cheap bottle of Port for about $5-8 (Dow), but you want something nicer, try Sandeman Port ($15) or Warre Port ($15-20).
If you want something mildly sweet red wine, try Zinfandel and Cabernet Franc. Zinfandel is the same grape as White Zinfandel, so it has some natural sweetness. Good Zinfandel includes Rosenblum Zinfandel ($15-35), Ridge ($20-35, include Geyserville and York Creek and Lytton Spring). As for Cabernet Franc, it has some mild sweetness in the aftertaste which is a favorite of wine makers to blend their wines and make them softer and sweeter. I like Cabernet Franc from Peju ($30).
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chanti are all tend to be not sweet enough for beginner. Pinot noir is not sweet but fruity and light, so it is good non-sweet red wine for beginners.
Have fun and experiment.
