I started my own. Just get a Mr. Beer Kit and that tells you everything that you need. Then if you continue to do it, look online for you local beer making place and get the better stuff there. but it is pretty hard and takes some time. just so you know.

I have never been impressed by the beer that comes out of a Mr Beer kit.
I would recommend you look at a local home brew shop, which will be the place you will buy your supplies anyway. They usually can put a kit together for you as well, but more quality stuff, that will make better beer in the end if you do it right.
The biggest pieces when I was home brewing was a pot that you could boil 5 gallons in (you can get really expensive here if you are not careful), and then the containers to transfer the beer into, I used glass carbouys (sp?), but There are also plastic buckets that are cheaper and not as good. You have a bunch of misc stuff like the corks for the carbouys that allow air out, but not in, the transfer process to move the beer from one to container to another, and then the bottling stuff.
Most people start out bottling to reused beer bottles, and you will need alot of them. Bottling was the biggest hassle in my opinion, and If I did it again, I would look into the little mini kegs that are available for this.
In general, the most important thing in brewing and bottling is to steralize everything that touches the beer. If you accidentally contaminate the beer, it will probably be undrinkable.
It is fun if you can get a friend or two involved, that way you can split the cost of your beer by a couple people, and you have some people to share home brew with. Then you can each take turns making up a batch with a different receipt.

Keep in mind that much of the same items you will buy for beer will be appropriate for wine as the equipment is concerned. From eckraus.com you can get the whole start up kit for beer/wine for about $150.00.
Then it is a matter of following directions and in about 28 days, you will have beer. There are other places ( Bier Haus International) You can make some really great beer or wine either way and the cost at least for wine is a savings. Possibly not as much savings as for beer but you'll learn there's a lot more kinds of beer in the world than what we drink in the US.
You can get real expensive and virtually have a small micro brewery in your house but you will just as well served making 6 gallons at a time. Getting bottles that aren't screw top will be a little expensive unless you still have a bar in town that sells 12 oz. bottles that need a church key. They may give them to you since they throw them away in the dumpster at night.
Good Luck.

It depends on where you live. If you can find a home brew supply house in your area, they can walk you through it. They will also have different recipes for different kinds of beer. Basically you need the ingredients, a 5 gallon glass carboy with an airlock, bottles, caps, capper & & a few other things that look like they came out of a lab.
