I am taking a cake class tomorrow after work and won't have time to go home and make my icing.

Yes as long as you cover it with a damp cloth and either put it in a zip lock bag or cover it with plastic wrap. the plastic will keep the towel from drying out.

If you can figure out how to keep it damp. Royal icing as you know is mostly to make flowers out of while it's edible;it's not very tasty, like buttercream. I have made royal icing and made my flowers the same day, but you have to keep it covered with a damp cloth to keep it from drying out. P.S. If you won't a smooth surface for you're cake try fondant, you can roll it out like biscuit dough then after you drape it over you're cake you can smooth it down with you're hands or use a "paddle"(I'm sure that piece of equipment has a technical name) like on Ace of Cakes. You also can mold flower petals out of it.

No. It will be hard as rock the next day. It has to go on the cake, then you can store the cake with the icing on it. Royal icing has to be used not long after you make it.

it's got a zip shelf life. you might try keeping it in an air tight container - that might extend the life a lil bit but not days.
it's best made and used when ready to ice things.
