The police seem to be using Tasers more and more just to punish people who talk back to them or are uncooperative in other ways. Should we officially allow this?

Just to be clear: the question wasn't whether the police should be able to use Tasers at all, but rather whether they should be allowed to use them on a whim, just to punish a suspect.

They are using them too much. They should only use them when absolutely necessary to get somebody under control.

Why would you even ask such an opiniated question?

Street Justice...Police are permited and use a tazer as necessary. If you are not cooperating are or possibly ready to fight then this is good use of a tazer. If a person sits and refuses to move, and runs their mouth then this is a form of reistance the police have to deal with. If verbal requests for compliance aren't working what do you expect the officer to do-let the suspect do whatever thet feel like.

Police work has come a long way from the 60s and 70s where there was much more police beatings occuring and a tazer is far less painful then getting a beating. The reason why people make such a big deal about tazers is all the negative media propaganda that people easily take as the gospel.

You will question the use of a tazer until one day when the police save your life by tazing someone who was about to attack you or maybe save the life of a friend relative or neighbor by tazing them rather than shooting them.

A Taser is not a means of punishment. It is a tool to bring an uncooperative subject under control without serious injury to officers OR the suspect.

Tasers are used to bring resisting subjects under control. State laws allow officers to use force to make arrests. Taser use is written into the policy of the various agencies in accordance with and in reference to these laws. They are not used to "punish" or to hand out "street justice." The role of the police is not to punish, that is the role of the court. The police arrest violators and send them to the courts for trial. Bottom line is that if you comply with the police officer's directives then you won't make the officer use force to arrest you. Its that simple.

I have been Tasered numerous times in training. I have also been OC Sprayed in training and currently serve as my agency's OC Spray Instructor. I have used my Taser and my OC Spray in the field numerous times in sixteen years of law enforcement. As an OC Instructor I would much rather Taser someone because after five seconds its all over. If I spray someone they will need to be decontaminated.

I love my Taser. I can bring a combative suspect down without even messing up my hair.

Just to be clear, you gave NO evidence that any officer has ever even been ACCUSED of using a Taser to "administer street justice". It may SEEM to you that something is happening. That does not mean is actually is.

As this was actually organised by Buckingham Palace with the full consent of the Queen I don't think she would have been very amused if the Police had turned up with water cannons and tasers. It would appear that the crowds thoroughly enjoyed it.

I was always raised to respect any type of law enforcement. If someone is acting a jack and the police officer feels threatened then they should be able to taser the shizzle out of em! Maybe it'll jar some of those brain cells into commission. Anyone whom dises a cop isn't a very bright individual.

If you don't get cocky with the police officer with a Taser pointing at you, and you do as you are asked, you won't get Tased.

Does that seem somehow "complicated" to you?

Tasers are a comparitively low-risk tool that enables a 5'10" 160lb cop control a 6"6" 350lb idiot without doing them any permanent harm. I think it's a WONDERFUL thing.

Maybe we should be training High School teachers how to use them?

Does it just "seem" like it, or are they actually tasing someone who refuses to provide drivers lic & registration ?

There is a lot of training involved with taser certification. Including the option of being tased themselves. I find it hard to believe they are just taser happy. plus, you need to know where it lies in the use of force continuum. Here (Michigan) it rates lower than peperspray (can be used before peperspray).

Tasers should only be used if they really, really have to. Definitely the use of Tasers should be very carefully regulated, but they should be allowed to use them.

Its not justice. Its enforcement and its far less painful than the alternative. I only use the taser in the same scenarios I would use my baton,fists,elbows,knees,feet,etc... It just makes it far more safe for me and far, far less painful for the criminal.

That taser hurts for 5 seconds, where a broken arm/leg will hurt for months and be very debilitating.
