Put an item of clothing that you have been wearing in the basket. It might encourage your cat to sleep there if she/he can smell you.

Cats like to sleep where they can 'catch sunbeams:' you could try placing the basket where it gets most sun.

They do not sleeping on the floor - so if you can put the bed on a work surface, or couch, or somewhere higher-up.

Inside the basket, place something that is soft and cosy to snuggle up in. That can be anything from an old anorak to the soft beds you can buy from a pet accessories supplier, such as Pets as Home.

If it is cold, you can place a heated pad in the bed - again, there are heated pads suitable for purchase from a pet accessories supplier.

In the winter, if it is cold, put the bed next to a radiator.

As other anwerers have suggested, you can add an item of your clothing to the basket.

You can also take a soft, clean cloth, and wipe the cat's head - this may sound silly but if you wipe the cats scent glands - below the ears and under its chin and then wipe the bedding with it, you will transfer the cats 'own smell' to the bedding.

Good luck

All cats do that. Unless there basket is outside in a converseratory or other, they dont have anything else to sleep in except there basket so they will go into there basket. If they have access to the living room, course there going to sleep or sit on the couch, its only natural, us humans do it, cats are no different.

wrap a hot water bottle in a towel or sheet and place it in the basket. cats love warm stuff so it should snuggle up on/beside it. Once it starts using it, take the hot water bottle out and the cat will have left it's scent there and remember it as a cosy place.
Or you could try putting the basket infront of a warm place - i know you've probably not got your heaters or fire on at this time of year but maybe try putting it on the floor where the sun shines in the window while it gets used to the basket.

hope this helps! it's annoying spending money on something for your pet and it's just not bothered by it! :)

Cats sleep where they feel comfortable and safe and this can vary with the time of day and even the weather. Some cats will chose a favourite place and stick with it but rest assured it will not be the place you want it to be. Just rejoice in your cats free spirit and sell the basket! Good luck

They sleep where they feel comfortable, not where we think they should sleep. I've seen mine cram themselves into empty boxes for a nap, sleep overnight under the desk, on chairs, on a towel on the floor, on the bed, in the laundry basket, flat on a wood floor, on the cat tree. Anywhere they want. The spots switch around for each cat. For weeks one may like the sofa for all their sleep time, then suddenly it's the closet they like instead. I doubt I could get any to use a specific place to sleep that I want them to, and it really doesn't matter actually. Just make sure you don't step on them when they decide the hallway or floor is the favorite spot of the day.

Why worry about where your cat sits , so long as he/she is happy and in good health then let the cat sit or lay where he/she wants, my cat lays on anything where I have just been, thinking to himself that where I was sitting must be more comfy, he even sleeps on the bed at night and is quite content,
so pamper him/her for when they are gone you might just wish for just another day with your cat,
as for the basket ? well my cat never did like the idea of that and it could be the same for yours,
take care, bye for now.

We have 3 cats. We don't have any cat baskets. We let our cats sleep anywhere.

Cats will sleep wherever they feel like - on your bed, on the dining chairs, on the sofa, on the window sill, in the dog's basket. In fact anywhere they feel safe and comfortable.

If there is any place your cat likes to sleep regularly, get a cat blanket (or two) from your local pet shop. Use it to cover whatever item of furniture your cat like to sleep on - he/she may then start to sleep in one place. You might then be able to transfer the blanket to your cat's basket and the cat will sleep there instead.

When I foster kittens and adopt them out, I always suggest the owner puts some item of clothing they have worn but not washed in the box/basket/bed. The cat may never sleep there, though. Mine only used it during the day -- at night she liked to sleep across my son's neck!

Cats are fickle creatures my dear old recently departed moggie would never sleep in his basket.

Even with he catnip it never did entice him into his basket though he would sleep anywhere as and when he wished except like I said his basket.

I wonder how many unused cats baskets there are out there?
