There is no "pit bull" breed. Saying you have a pit bull is like saying you have a retriever or a spaniel. There are many different breeds that frequently get classified as "pit bulls" including the American Staffordshire Terrier, English Staffordshire Terrier, and American Pit Bull Terrier. To the general public breeds such as the Cane Corso, American Bulldog, Bull Terrier, and Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog also get lumped together under the generic term of "pit bull." But when it comes down to it, any medium sized dog with a boxy head can be labeled "pit bull" which is precisely why you hear so many stories of "pit bull" attacks -- you can call nearly anything a pit bull if it fits that vague description!

American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Several physically similar breeds that are mistakenly termed "pit bull", including the Indian Bull Terrier, Argentine Dogo, the American Bulldog, the Bull Terrier and the Perro de Presa Canario. All of these breeds as well as many others (including Great Danes, Newfoundlands and Rottweilers) are members of the Molosser family of dog breeds

The term pit bull derived from the dogs that they would throw in the "pit" to fight. This started with the Alaskan gold rush. The American bull terrier adopted this name. They bread the dogs to be strong, shorter necks(protect the jugular) and they bred them until another feature developed. "Lock Jaw" A "pit bull" is any dog thrown in a pit to fight. That's how it was. It's almost a slang for dogs that is morphing into meaning other things now. Check out the link below. Can you find the pit? I did it in my second try.

Yes and no, There are those that have been raised by good owners and there are those that have been used and abused by bad owners. The fortunate Pit bulls, have lived in loving homes and are wonderful, affectionate and gentle dogs. The others are the dogs you hear about on the news but don't want to meet. They give this breed of dog a bad name, when in truth it is mans fault for misusing them.

There rednosed pits, blues, and different bloodlines. There are also American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers that are confused to be pitbulls too, but they're actually AKC registered whereas pitbulls aren't.

There are shorter more muscular ones that look more like staffies than American Pitts and taller thinner ones. The more bully ones are usually show type. No difference in personality or colour. Both great dogs when raised right.
