I have a few tattoos; family wasn't at first glad that I had gotten them. They seemed to feel that they were unnessecary and that "I didn't need them."

Now; people don't need to dye or lighten their hair, they don't need to wear ugly toupees or inject things into their head to make hair grow, they don't need to get plastic surgery to enlarge their breasts or shrink their butts...

Compared to all of this why are tattoos still seen negatively as compared to other cosmetic and "unnessecary" body mods?

because the media tells us that we have to look perfect. plastic surgery is usually used to modify our appearance. and since most guys drool over the site of swim suit models perfect facial features and toned yet still skinny bodies, it makes women think they need to look like that to keep a man. when the reality is.. only about 10% or less of the actual world population fits into the mold of a "perfect body". tattoos arent seen as beautiful works of art like they should be. people see them as trampy on girls. although i have a tattoo that i love and could care less about what anyone else thinks about it... and i wouldnt resort to plastic surgery if my life depended on it because i feel im beautiful all on my own and meant to look this way.

I think part of it is that a lot of plastic surgery isn't super immediately obvious in the way that tattoos are. A lot of people would see plastic surgery as making someone more attractive, while tattooing is viewed as more destructive and less-attractive (I don't agree, however I think that's the general consensus)- while plastic surgery is an attempt to fit in tattoos are like an attempt to not fit in. There's also the stigma attached with the people who started tattoos (sideshow freaks, sailors, bikers, outlaws etc.) so people view it as a rebellious thing. Really to a LOT of people tattoos make a person more attractive the way highlights might make a normal person more attractive. I think as more and more people get tattoos the stigma will die down a little, but people with sleeves and giant tattoos will still have to endure a lot more crap until they're accepted along with the college lower-back-tribal-tattoo crowd.

Well you're right to a degree. The biggest problem with tattoos is their permanency and the fact that the rose tattooed on your shoulder will be a wrinkled saggy rose in a few years. I put tattoos in the same category as cosmetic surgery. I'm happy with what I've got and while I'm certainly no raving beauty, don't see the need for the man-made additions. Healthy skin is attractive, alluring and touchable. Some tatoos just aren't....

Tattoos have long symbolized an association with outlaw culture. Many of us 40 an older will always have that view of it, despite the tattoos being seen as merely decorative by the next generation. And we know that prospective employeers, landlords, lenders, business associates and mates may feel the same way.

We can just chortle at poor choices in temporary body modification (although some of the f'ed-up collagen lips look like they're always going to look bad!) but the permanency of tattoo ink is a whole other level.

One or two small tattoos in inconspicuous areas are fine...what has brought the taboos are people and celebrities getting BIG and UGLY tattoos ALL OVER their body. It just grosses me out. These other things you compare it to improve one's looks...how does a tattoo improve your looks...who wants to hire such a gross looking person for a job?...it tells me you have a problem with the blank body you were born with. (Keith Urban has a couple of tattoos but they are well placed and have a real meaning to him). Just a comment.

Tatoos are ugly, plus you're stuck with them forever.

If you dye your hair, you can always undo it or let it grow out.
