I recently started my own exercise program. I spend about 5 days a week at the gym and usually exercise between 1 (a short workout) to 2 and a half hours. I usually run, bike, do the stairmaster, work with an exercise ball & medicine ball for tone, and lift weights.
I gained about 3-4 pounds the past couples weeks---is this likely to be muscle? And will the fat I'm looking to lose start coming off soon after?

As far as diet goes, all I've done is cut back on junk and try to keep all my portion sizes logical---but nothing too serious.

Yes, a pound of fat and a pound of muscle both weigh a pound, however a pound of muscle takes up much less space. Are your clothes fitting looser? Are you feeling better?

Baby steps, you'll get there.

What you are experiencing is perfectly normal. I know it's frustrating when your goal is to lose weight. Pay close attention to how firm your muscles are feeling, especially the arms, chest, and back - that's where many women first notice the effects of exercise. And your waist will likely feel a little leaner too. Are you pants getting looser?

I like your diet ideas, they will keep you trim for life. I don't know how long you've been at this, but it takes a month or a little more to really notice things starting to change. Be patient, stick with it, you will meet your goal. Best of luck to you!

The best way to lose weight is doing exercise.

The best type of exercise for weight loss is something you ENJOY DOING and are likely to continue doing - not just while losing weight but also as you maintain weight in the long term.

Your initial fitness goal should be to do 30 minutes of exercise each day. Thereafter, gradually increase this (ideally) to about 60 minutes of exercise per day.

The best combination of exercise is a mixture of aerobic and weight/strength training (and stretching). Aerobic and weight/strength training exercises both assist weight loss but in different ways.

Depends on what u eat.

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.

Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.

I think you are on a good path. {He said as he sat on his fat bottom}
As you work out, remember to track inches, not pounds.You new improved muscles are going to weigh more, but it's a GOOD kind of "more" so don't track your weight, but rather how well your clothes fit.
