I was reading a few questions, all honest and generally polite, and noticed a strange trend. No matter how many times the asker says "not all" or "some" or "not all inclusive" someone gets their panties in a bunch and starts accusing them of making generalized statements, or insulting the entire group. Most of the questions I'm referring to also had a large number of answerers insulting the askers rather than actully answering the questions. Why do so many people respond this way? Before some idiot says that I'm generalizing, I'm not. Apparently too many don't bother to read the questions, because if they'd bother to read, the questions generally state that it is a certain portion referred to, not the entire group.

I think some--not all--religious people get into a tizzy about this kind of thing because they want and need to accept certain ideas on faith.

I think these people have a weak grasp of faith, and probably, the religion they profess to practice.

Religious people with a strong faith and a deep understanding of their own religion are quite open to discussion.

That's been my experience with such people.

Unfortunately, many people get caught up in generalities and cannot see a real question...after all, you must admit there are a lot of statements made that are insulting to religions.

I wasn't aware of any defensiveness. I don't belong to a formal religion either. Maybe that has something to do with it. It is degrading and disrespectful if answerers are slinging insults. I think some people get defensive just defending their beliefs or non-beliefs.

I don't understand why atheist are defensive and insulting. It doesn't mean all atheist are bad, some just don't have any manners.

A generalisation:
People in this category have strong opinions and are here to 'share' them and debate other's opinions.

I have also asked a smiliar question to this and was told "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" - very constructive, don't you agree???

Not answering a question while answering a question is pet peeve of mine. People do that because they have no other recourse. Some of the people on here are offended that anyone would question what they believe and feel they have to say something so they attack.

They are completely convinced that what they believe is 100% correct. Any challenge to their belief system is often meant with hostility. I've seen this happen with other questions with "touchy" subjects too - its human nature.
