It seems like the only time some of my family members call is when they need money. Otherwise, I never hear anything from them. What's a polite way to just say no?

Simply, but kindly say: "Sorry, I'd help if I could, but I just can't."

(no need to explain why you won't "share", it's your money. If you have given them money in the past, they are not likely to give up easily --- please note: I did not say "loaned" them money.) You may have to say "no" more than once. The more often they ask, the shorter the answer should be until you are simply saying "No." - with no follow up comment- the pause will be quite uncomfortable, but by this time, they should understand that they are not getting any more money - ever.

Good luck - this could make your relationship even more distant - but maybe that's for the best if they are only using your as the emergency bankroll.

Peace.

Maybe you should point it out to them how they only get in touch with you when they need something.

Anyway, a good way to decline them is to say that as a matter of principle you don't lend money to anyone, or that you just can't spare any at the moment.

I'd keep the reply short and to the point. I have a quote that I follow when it comes to lending money to family - 'Borrower nor lender be.' If I can help a family member, I would (To an extent) and I wouldn't expect to be repaid.

Ha! I have that problem with one of my friends..I tell her either I don't have any money or I remind her she hasn't paid me back from the last time. Or you could simply say," You know I was watching Dr. Phil and he said never lend money to family cause it causes nothing but bad feelings so I decided to take his advice and not lend money to anyone..sorry.

Just nicely tell them that you've got bills to pay or you've got a major bill that's due at the end of the month.. that should help a bit..

Tell him (there's only one of those in my family) that I don't have the extra to spare right now.

Tell them you can't spare anything right now, but you'd love to hear from them more than when they need something.

Just tell them to get off their lazy asses and find a job at Jollybee.

Just say no. Eventually they will get the point.
