more subs are louder if you have more amps too. watts is what makes it all work. and a 2000w sub will slam harder than a 800w sub but only if you have a 2000w amp. if you have a 800w amp then both subs put out the same. also if you have 2 12s running 4000watts they will be louder than 4 12s only running 2000watts

Wow need a BS alarm on this question....
None of these answers are correct..... first of all the human ear can hear down to 20 hertz..... when a sub is playing its generally 80 hertz and below..... so how is that too low to hear???
You can't beat moving mass (cone area) the more cone area you have the louder it will be.
If you have a single 12 inch driver on 500 watts..... and you add another 12 inch driver you will gain 3 dB's just off one sub.... if you buy another 500 watt amp you will gain another 3 dB's
The box has alot to do with how its going to sound and how loud its going to be.... more so then the sub or amp itself.
Good Luck

Two are indeed louder than one - twice the sound energy, in fact. However, our perception of sound is such that you need about 10 times the sound energy before it 'seems' about twice as loud to you. Sound energy is directly proportional to wattage, so an 800W is *potentially* four times as loud as a 200W, assuming it's operated at full power - this is not recommended because it tends to damage the speaker. As a rule of thumb, any speaker run at over half capacity loses dynamic response and starts to damage itself.
Because subwoofers operate below the range of normal human hearing, you don't really hear them so much as feel the vibration; anything you 'hear' is from secondary vibrations. Past a certain point, which is about 50W for most applications, you're adding nothing to the 'sound picture' and all you're doing is shaking the car (or house) and annoying people.

impossible question to respond to cuz of all of the countless types. now are 2 12" subs louder than one million 15" sub of an analogous form(kicker comp 12" and 15") then i might say sure. in any different case it relies upon on the type and score.

Yes, Wattage has EVERYTHING to do with it. More subs generally create more sound waves by moving MORE air (bear in mind combined size of sub cones and RMS wattage, not max).

Are you actually hearing below human hearing sound anyway? It is more of a feeling in the chest. If your sub is lould your hearing overtone rattle of the box and the car and other kinds of nasty vibrations called distortion. Don't worry lould sound will cause hearing loss.
