What is Al-Qaeda...?

Question

If we are at war with terrorist and these terrorists are Al-Qaeda then what exactly are we fighting? I'd like to know...

-What are its motives?

-How is it structured?

-How does it grow in strength and size?

-Where and how is vulnerable?

I think it would be important to understand these things if we are to win a war against Al-Qaeda.

Al Qaeda is one of hundreds of groups recognized by US and international authorities as terrorists.

It is a Sunni organization, which primarily dates back to the late 1980s in Afghanistan. Their stated goals are the elimination of any who oppose the creation of a religious Islamic state across the entire Middle East, including Shiites (other Muslims), Israel, the US and any other foreign nations or religions that get in their way.

Like most terrorist groups, they operate in a loose hierarchy, with central coordination for large-scale plans, but also independent cells carrying out local objectives.

Like most terrorist groups (or any other group) they recruit from people who share their ideological and philosophical goals.

They are a world-wide organization, with the current leadership based on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
