Where in the Bible does it say that 'speaking in tongues' will stop after the original disciples die.

Thanks to all who responded so quickly. First I have a confession to make. I am a Baptised in the Holy Spirit believer and I have been speaking in tongues for 20 years now. The reason I asked the question is hoping those who do not believe in this spiritual gift could give me some evidence for their belief. For those who do not know about the tongues thing get a Bible and read what happend to the disciples in Acts 2.

If you read Acts 9 where it describes Pauls conversion you will note that Ananias, who was not one of the Apostles, layed hands on Paul who received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Speaking in tongues serves two purposes: for personal edification (1 Cor 14:4 KJV) as well as one of gifts of the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel. And speaking in tongues has not ceased because the Church has not been perfected yet (1 Cor 13:8-10 KJV). But not all will receive this gift. Tongues existed after the God's Holy Spirit was poured out in Acts 2.

The tongue is the last, most stubborn member of the body to submit to God (James 3:8 KJV). I personally am grateful I am able to speak in a heavenly prayer language that allows my inner spirit to communicate with God. I know that God is working in my life to cleave the carnal things that my flesh is not conscious of and to purify my spirit towards holiness. I honestly do not know what I would do with out it.

If anything, speaking in tongues should not be forbidden (1 Cor 14:39 KJV). It is a genuine gift of the Holy Spirit and no man can stop nor deny its existance during these end times.

This type question bore me to tears. Sorry but I get tired providing scripture especially now that I am pagan. I will ask a question to make you think. Where in the bible does it say tongues will continue? Where in the bible did tongues exist before Christ? Where in the bible does Christ say he came to give enduring tongues? Same difference. However I will say go to Joel chapter 2, Acts chapter 2, and 1 Corinthians chapters 12, 13 and 14 and study each very thorough especially acts chapter 2 when Peter talks about Joel and pay close attention to what Acts chapter 2 says tongues are, I think you will be surprised to see the bible defines this gift as merely human language which is understood by those from that region and it was miraculous because the men speaking it did not learn it naturally.

Here is a website which has very well research and documented proof that modern tongues are fake. http://www.bible.ca/tongues.htm

Edit:
After reading the so called Christians answer it is still just as plain as ever the tongue speakers do not know the bible or care.

I will go ahead and tell you it was 1 Corinthians chapter 13 were Paul was talking about love being greater then the gift of miracles and supernatural gifts and promised they would cese and only love would remain. Where is love today? I sure isn't with tongues..

He made many points including they would cease, and that only love would remain contradicting the theory that they will last til Jesus returns. He also said if people insisted on the imperfect tempory gifts then they should speak one at a time in an orderly manner and that someone else should intrepret or else keep quiet. Paul also said that the women should stay silent in the churches. This was in context of tongues. He also said that he would rather speak three words that are understood by all then ten thousand tongues in which people could not understand. He asked question like how does the one speaking know they are not cursing God? Interesting. How do you all know you are not cursing your God? How do you know you are not demon possessed?

Read 1 Corinthians chapters 12,13 14. Paul also said that tongues were a sign not to the believer, but to the unbeliever. How does modersn tongues edify anone but the speaker and how do are a sig for the unbeliever since no one understands them?

In the following, all referances included have the Apostles laying on hands to give the gift.
When they died, so did the gifts.
However, the Bible does indicate how long the ‘gift of tongues’ would be a part of Christian experience. According to the record, this gift and the other gifts of the spirit were always conveyed to persons by the laying on of hands of the apostles of Jesus Christ or in their presence. (Acts 2:4, 14, 17; 10:44-46; 19:6; see also Acts 8:14-18.) Thus, after their death and when the individuals who in that way had received the gifts died, the miraculous gifts resulting from the operation of God’s spirit must have come to their end. Such a view agrees with the purpose of those gifts as stated at Hebrews 2:2-4.
If the giver is gone, from where does the gift come?
Satan and witchcraft also provide this action.....in a mocery of God.

I think you misunderstand something.

I am not sure if the Bible directly says that miracles of the Holy Spirit will cease.

The reason why speaking in tongues is un-Biblical is because of how it is done.

If you've been in a church where people speak in tongues you would have seen how its basically incoherent babble and chicken sounds that people make.

In the Bible it says that when people speak in tongues there must be people nearby who understand and interpret it. Basically it is for a purpose. For example if you went to another country and you suddenly knew their langue to share the Gospel with them. It is also not random, but has to be in an orderly manner.

But what Pentecostals do is they make a bunch of noises that nobody understands when they worship.

It doesn't as far as I'm aware - the Bible states quite clearly what the gifts of the Spirit are. Something I have noticed though is that Christians who can't accept this are a pretty miserable and often divisive bunch. Think the New Testament church is still the model to follow.

I've not heard of the Bible saying that. So far as I know then speaking in tongues is a gift of the Spirit and one that is alive and well in many Churches today.

I've always been told it says that in Hebrews, but I have read the whole book of Hebrews and it doesn't say a thing about it. I am not a Christian, but I know that speaking in tongues is a very real thing....It's human nature to question things like that though, so question away.

I've never heard of that and I'm a preacher's daughter.
(A preacher who knows the scripture inside and out)
I could ask him, just in case I am mistaken.
But I would start by looking in a Concordance for terms in relation to "tongues" to get some books and verses to start looking for that... I would start with the "Day of Pentecost" or the "Tower of Babel" stories.

That's a common explanation given to 'Pentecostals' but if you can get interpretation and follow Cor. 15 guidelines go for it.
