Hi, yes medication can help - but they are not always a magic cure. The following steps will eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks:
1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. You can get free downloads in you put "progressive muscle relaxation" into Google (e.g. lots of universities have them as free downloads)
With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!

I would think that medications would be the last resort in your situation. Medications all have side effects, most of them unwanted and undesirable. You know, I am sure, that many teens have to deal with this condition. It often passes with time. Therapy would be more likely to help than medication. A school counselor, a priest or just a very good friend that you can trust and confide in would help get your fears and frustrations out in the open and help you to recognize them and deal with them. Just know that you are not alone and there are many people that have had to deal with this condition and that help can be found. Start with your counselor or priest and find someone you can talk to. Parents can sometime help but are not usually the answer.

Yes, you can go on anti-anxiety medication. I heard there are some you can take infrequently, like when you're going out, and they work really quick to calm you down.
It would probably be a better idea to sortof fix the social anxiety yourself though. I'm using cognitive therapy right now with my therapist and it seems to be working. Check out the book Mind Over Mood by Greenberger & Padesky, my therapist recommended it to me and it's great, it will probably help you with your anxiety.

There are medications that can help you. Doctors have a variety to choose from to find one that fits your specific needs. Do not worry about dangerous side-effect, because they are rare. Depending on which psychiatrist you go to, they may determine that counseling is all you need. Each person is different and each situation is unique.
Don't be afraid to seek professional help due to stigmas or second-hand information from others. It is a big step to get professional help, but when you do you will feel relief. Even simply talking to a counselor can help.

I do. I don't keep it under wraps. Unfortunately people don't really seem to think that I have it and still shove me into social situations, especially my teachers or classmates sometimes. I felt overwhelming bouts of nausea the night before the first day of school in September. Just the thought of having to "introduce" yourself in your new classes against your will..with new teachers..and few new classmates. It's so awful. I also feel so horrible walking down the hallway or anywhere with a lot of people because they stare. I feel eyes all over me and I feel like I want to run and hide. When I need to ask a classmate a question I have to seriously push myself to do it. I always feel like people don't like me. I know most of my classmates just like me to have someone to copy homework off of and stuff. I've had it since 5th grade, started shortly after I got bullied that year.

Zoloft really helped me with my social anxiety disorder and the side effects are relatively minimal and short-term. It is much safer than being treated with a short-acting benzodiazipine and seems to help quite a bit more, or at least it has for me.

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

There are medications that will help prevent the anxiety attacks and there are also medications that you can take to stop them when they occur - the only problem with the later is that you dont learn the behavioural way to stop these when they occur and you can become dependenet on these medicines. As your doctor is careful I would trust his judgement and he will hopefully monitor you with whichever you chose; however....if it was me, I would probably want to learn ways to control these without medications - there are techniques out there that can help you.
I hope this helps.

You should see a psychiatrist, because he/she can prescribe you medicine that isn't dangerous. Some anti-depressants are dangerous but not all. The medications do work though, as long as the symptoms aren't bad.
Hope this helps!
