A belief is an assertion; it is a claim that "such and such" is true. Our lives are claims about the reality we live in. Moreover, our lives are claims about the best way to live. We are in essence saying that "If you were in my shoes at this time, and place, with my history, you would make the choices I am making."

Belief is the psychological state in which an individual is convinced of the truth of a proposition. Like the related concepts truth, knowledge, and wisdom, there is no precise definition of belief on which scholars agree, but rather numerous theories and continued debate about the nature of belief.

In order to believe one thing you necessarily have to disbelieve something else. It's the classic battle of Evil vs Good.
In order to understand this you must be able to "suspend" your belief (this is where faith comes in), and open your mind, to see it anew.
Why do we hold onto them so hard? Because it is like a social club, they make us feel better than others. What are you for/against?

Willpower. To some they believe that god is what gets them through the day. But what they don't realize that god doesn't really exist but it is their mind turning their willpower into a god. When you are real bad shape, like say got into a car accident, you can start to see things that are not real. Yet can help you survive the accident, because its your willpower. Your will to survive.
