Frankly speaking i would be afraid to own a pit bull.....okay it can so much protect you but there is also a possible risk that it might attack you or your kids.....there had been news that pit bulls are capable of such....so if you want a dog that protect you and your family wouldn't you choose a dog that is like you say on the top ten list for guard dogs with no histories of actually attacking the owner....i mean what good is protection of hiring someone who could back fire....in case of my family protection i for one will avoid such mistake to any length
I agree with you

I think a lot of people get a Pit because it a macho thing. They think they are going to have the baddest dog in town. And they find out, if you do not teach to be mean, they end with the sweetest dog in town.
If they are not trained to hate strangers they are not a good guard dog. My pit loves everyone. As proof I have been robbed twice. I can just imagine my Pit bouncing around the crooks wanted to get petted. I have an alarm system now.
I did not get the Pit for a guard dog and she was trained to be a people dog.
In my experience, over the years, the most family protective dogs I have had were the German Shepard's.

As mentioned, it's not a bad breed but bad owners. I have a Pit bull and she is by far our favorite dog that we have owned to date. I adopted her from our SPCA. I did not adopt her for any status symbol or for guarding. I adopted her to love. You may have heard about the woman in England whose dog bit off half of her face? She was the first person in history to have a face transplant. And do you know what breed that dog was??? That's right!!! It was a Labrador. (WHAT?? Not a Pit bull??) No, it was a Lab. My point being that any dog could be aggressive. Poodles have one of the highest biting tendencies. Maybe there should be a ban on poodles. Responsible owners make responsible pets! Be part of the solution and not a part of the problem! There should be no guard dogs, this is why there is a problem with Pit bull owners. If you want protection, buy an alarm system.

1. I own a pit and it is not for protection or for the "status". Go get a book and educate yourself. I'm sure a lot of responsible pit owners can attest to this. We own pits because they are loyal and great dogs. I would never mistake my pit to be the hardest dog in town. He's the exact opposite. Don't try to lump everyone in the same category and say we own them for the status.

Well, actually, pit bulls are the best kind of guard dog to get. The reason MOST people get them is because they want to make money by training/forcing those dogs to fight. That's why they have a bad reputation and because they're so aggressive. My step-dad has a pit bull, and as long as you train them right, they're just like most dogs. My step-dad has one because he wants to protect his family. I think it's better to have a guard dog on the top ten list, so you'll always be protected. As long as you train them not to take out other dogs, and to be nice to everyone but robbers or criminals, you'll be just fine. That's the reason why.

I somewhat agree... I do not like pitbulls. I used to own one she was stupid. She killed 6 of her puppies. And I saw on the news where this woman was going home she lived in an apartment building and her neighbor opened the door just as she was in the hall. And 2 huge pits came running out and attacked and killed her for no reason. The owner did not raise them to guard either, and these dogs were usually good natured, but something happened on that particular day to make them snap. I would never own one. All you hear is bad owners make bad dogs, well I say thats BS some dogs are just crazy from the get go. People need to start putting their kids before the dam dogs.

In our society, it is stupid to have any dog specifically for a "Guard Dog" unless you are a professional in the field of security and a professional dog trainer.
Anyone else who gets a dog for a 'guard dog' is just plain ignorant of dog behavior, basic dog behavior, and the legalities of the liability issues regarding aggressive dogs.
Pitbulls are not bred to be aggressive. They are bred to have a lower flash point during arousal that sends them into fighting.
Anybody who breeds a dog with known aggressive behavior is irresponsible and the human that does such a thing should be spayed/neutered with a rusty butter knife and no anesthesia.

Pit Bull horror stories are the sole fault of horrible Pit owners. In my experiences with dogs, many Pits among them, there are no bad dogs, but there are bad owners. Why condemn an entire breed through ignorance, fed by mass media caused hysteria, without first finding out the facts for sure. My brother has two, my sister one, and I have two Rottweillers, and none of us want the "baddest" dog in town, we just love the dogs, NOT ONE of whom has bitten without cause. And only one of whom has ever bitten anyone, though it was justified.

It isn't only just for 'protection'. Pit bulls can be JUST as lovable as any other dog. I think anyone who keeps a dog just for a guard dog is cruel. Dogs need to be apart of the family, too.
