Man's inhumanity to man will continue as long as man loves God more than he loves his fellow man. Joseph Lewis (1889-1968)

I've actually heard people who would kill their own child or other loved one if 'God' 'told' them to because it means (s)he has a higher plan ... so yes, this quote has a lot of truth.

As an atheist, I'm not sure if it's as simple as that. Most people have the need to believe in a higher power (you and I are not in their numbers, but we are the exceptions!). The others need to follow someone or something - sad but true. This sheep-like behaviour can be manipulated for good or bad. The CEOs of the religions use it both ways, depending on the political climate, and the sheep will willingly go either way. At least SOME of the time they promote peace towards mankind, and rarely, the environment. My kids, who have not been indoctrinated into religion are naturally open-minded and peaceful but I'm not sure how the sheep would react. They may turn into wolves!

With respect to Joseph Lewis, I think I'd like to tweak his saying. Imagine Charleton Heston reading this with a booming voice: "LOVE AND GOD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH INHUMANITY. That's why man invented religion."

Disagree. "Love of God" and "love of fellow man" are not mutually exclusive. And one can have no love (or even belief) in God, yet still lack compassion for one's fellow man.

"Intolerance does not arise when I think I have found the truth. Rather it arises comes about only when I think that, because I have found it, everyone else should agree with me."

A lot of man's inhumanity to man comes from man loving himself more than he loves his fellow man.

I Disagree. - How can someone with a true understanding of love be inhumane to anything or anyone?

I guess it all depends on what god you follow.
Christ told us that the two greatest commandments were, To Love God with all your heart, mind and strength, and To Love your neighbor as yourself.

You cannot love God and hate your brother.

Matthew 5:43-44
Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.

1 John 2:9
He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

I agree. We'll all continue to treat each other like crap as long as we continue to argue over whose god is the true god and if god really exists or not.
